Removing Marks and Scratches

Keeping a car in showroom condition can be a difficult task, no matter how carful you might be there will always be some way in which you will receive scratches and marks on your paint work, whether it's from a light collision from another vehicle or from a passerby brushing up against your car it's a nightmare. The best form of preventing this type of damage is to park as far away as you can from all other vehicles, this will reduce the possibility of accidental knocks and collisions. By parking as far away as you can this might reduce your chance of car damage but it's not practical in all situations.

Any form of car body damage that has broken the paint work like a bumper scuff, bumper
scratch
or a panel scratch will need to be repaired either by a car body repair shop or a mobile car body repair service, it will be too costly for equipment and materials to repair yourself and you will never get that perfect finish so let the professionals do it for you.

Some types of impact damage like blemishes light scratches or paint residue can be repaired by you. It's not as complicated to repair as the heaver impacts that have broken the paint work as stated above and will save you a lot of money in the long run by carrying out some diy.

To remove marks and blemishes the best technique is to use some form of alcohol cleaner, the best I find is standard thinners. Before you apply the solvent make sure the area has not been resprayed before, for some poorer lacquers can be removed with standard thinners. Use protective gloves and poor some of the thinners on to a cloth and rub over the mark or blemish, this will remove up to 80% of the marks. For the remainder use some cutting compound  on a cloth a rub over vigorously until you reach a satisfactory finish, then to buff up the repair use some finishing polish to give it that extra shine. If the marks and blemishes still remain then you might wish to try some more heaver techniques like the use of some wet and dry paper 2000 grade to go over the area before you use the cutting compound and polish, this will flatten out the area and remove and debris that might still be sitting in the lacquer layer.
