Repo Cars - How to Avoid Stolen Cars at Public Car Auction?

Repo Auctions is no doubt a great way to get cheap cars. Cars that have been repossessed can be had at prices that are far lesser than their actual market value. But there are some problems you should keep your eyes peeled for. One of them is that such auctions can and do bring with them the risk of stolen cars. The best method to resolve the problem of stolen repo cars is to understand and avoid it.

Repo auctions host vehicles that come from anyone. This is especially true of the small auctioneers without a reputation who take in cars - no questions asked. It is really quite difficult for even people in the car auctions sale to smell out a stolen car.

For normal customers who are eager to get a cheap car in good condition from auctions it is almost impossible. So the first step for a customer is to choose a well known and respected auction house to pick his/ her car.

Other things a customer can do are:

  • Verifying the documentation: It is important to check documents that come with the car - the V5 log book which is the vehicle registration paper, MOT, Tax receipt, service receipts and records are some of the crucial documents to verify. Without the V5 book it is a big risk in taking a car, what ever may be the excuse the seller offers.
  • Check vehicle history with the VIN: The Vehicle Identification Number is unique for every vehicle and the customer can obtain a VIN report by providing this number to understand the origin and vehicle history
  • Verify source of car: Cars that are put up through government departments, corporates, banks, leasing companies etc are generally reliable
  • Check registration papers to ensure that vehicle's VIN matches
  • Vehicle inspection: Stolen cars at repo auctions typically have locks changed, car repainted and such tell-tale signs
  • "Car check" through a company: There are companies that do a background check on cars for a small fee.
  • Checking up on owner contact: A home phone where the owner can be reached anytime could be an indicator of a genuine owner as against only mobile contact and/ or contact only at specific times

Armed with these tips stolen cars can be avoided quite easily. To know more about repo auctions and some really cool offers click on the link given below.
