Tailgating Worries

Posted: Dec 09, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Forty five percent of drivers regularly increase the risk of a serious accident due to tailgating (the practice of following too closely behind the driver in front) according to a report produced by the tyre manufacturer, Avon.

The manufacturer monitored, over the period of a week, the number of vehicles that failed to leave a significant gap between themselves and the driver in front. The drivers were monitored travelling at speeds of fifty miles per hour, and were seen to leave far less that then two second gap in the dry, and the four second gap in the wet weather conditions.

The study revealed that the people most likely to tailgate are those who drive for a living and therefore are used to it, with four in every five taxis being guilty of the practice, and lorry drivers tailgating up to ninety eight percent, which is an alarmingly high statistic.

The repercussions could be fatal, as at fifty miles per hour, a car would need the space of thirteen car lengths to stop. The most common times for offenders is during rush hour when people are impatient and fed up to be sitting in the traffic.

Oddly, the least likely according to the statistics to tailgate are vans, which contravenes the white van man stereotype, followed by motorcycles.

The findings come shortly after the RAC have released a study saying that tailgating is the biggest worry to British motorists.

If you are driving on the roads in the UK make sure that you have Car Insurance. Cheap policies are readily available online.
