For those consumers in the market for an older car, I list the 10 and 20 most reliable and durable cars of model year 1988. I use the Car Reliability Percentrank (RP) for 6-to-8-year-old vehicles as the joint measure of reliability and durability. As the name of the measure suggests, the Reliability Percentrank measure has a scale of 0 to 1, with 1 being the highest possible score.

The ten best cars of 1988 by the Percentrank measure of reliability and durability are:

  • The 2-wheel-drive Toyota Pickup (predecessor of the Tacoma), with a 1988 Car Reliability Percentrank of 1.00,
  • Honda Motor Company's Acura Legend, with a RP of 1.00,
  • The Toyota Corolla, with a RP of 0.98,
  • The Toyota Pickup, with a RP of 0.98,
  • The Honda Accord, with a RP of 0.98,
  • The Nissan Maxima, with a RP of 0.97,
  • The 4-cylinder Toyota Camry, with a RP of 0.96,
  • The Toyota Celica, with a RP of 0.94,
  • The Mazda 323, with a RP of 0.94,
  • The Mazda 929, with a RP of 0.94.

Of these 10 most reliable and durable automobiles, Toyota Motor Corporation accounts for 5, Honda Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation each account for 2, and Nissan Motor Company accounts for one.

The next 10 best cars of 1988 by the Reliability Percentrank are:

  • The Volvo 240 Series, with a 1988 Car Reliability Percentrank of 0.93,
  • The Toyota Camry, with a RP of 0.92,
  • The Nissan Pathfinder, with a RP of 0.92,
  • The V6 Nissan Pathfinder, with a RP of 0.92,
  • The Cadillac Eldorado, with a RP of 0.92,
  • The Honda Prelude, with a RP of 0.89,
  • The 4-cylinder Mazda 626, with a RP of 0.89,
  • The Mazda MX-6, with a RP of 0.89,
  • The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, with a RP of 0.89,
  • The Cadillac Seville, with a RP of 0.89.

It should be noted that the Reliability Percentrank of the Cadillac Eldorado had fallen to 0.19 by 1992, and that the Reliability Percentrank of the Cadillac Seville had fallen to 0.41 by 1992 and 0.16 by 1994. No other model had fallen below 0.60 by 1992; however, the Nissan Pathfinder and the 4-cylinder Mazda 626 had fallen below 0.80 - 0.79 and 0.63, respectively.

Of these next ten most reliable and durable automobiles, Nissan, Mazda, and General Motors Corporation each account for 2 and Toyota, Honda, Volvo AB, and Daimler-Benz AG each account for one.
