The Transmission In Your Car
I'm either the first girl or the only girl on both sides of my family; most of my family consists of boys. Therefore, you can come to two conclusions:
1. Yes, they used to bully me around & pick on me.
2. Since they did that, they didn't bother teaching me about a Used Transmission or anything about a car.
A Used Transmission - or a new transmission, it really doesn't matter - is the thing in your car that lets power to be sent from a power source. These power sources include engines & motors. A New & Used Transmission will use gears & a clutch in order to convert the speed of the power source into torque. There's usually a simpler transmission that can be called a "gearbox" since it really is a box that has a configuration of gears.
The most typical example that you can find is the transmission that's in your car - the transmission that's in any car. There's two types of car transmissions : manual & automatic; I personally prefer the automatic transmission over the manual one. Both of these transmissions do the same thing but in different ways. They turn engine speed (RPM if you want to refer to it as that instead) into torque .. which is measured in pounds/feet.
Both of these transmissions let the drive mechanism to shift from going forward into reverse without really having to turn off one engine and reverse the direction that the crankcase is going in with a second engine that's running in the complete opposite direction.
Hopefully that made sense .. because it made sense to me - but then again I am the one writing it.
If you have a manual transmission, there's a flywheel that's connected to the crankcase of the Rebuilt Auto Engine - or even the new engine that you have in your vehicle - that keeps on running at a constant speed. The engine power can be reduced & increased noticeable through the use of a manually operated clutch & a manually operated shifter. When you shift the gears, it'll do you the favor of avoiding a correspondingly significant, inefficient, pretty bad, and potentially damaging increase of engine speed. The reason why these gears are running at different speeds is because they're all different sizes. The bigger gears are used to transform higher engine RPM into higher torque at a low drive wheel speed by spinning significantly slower than the crankcase. When it comes to the smaller gears, they're the ones that turn the lower engine RPM into higher speed & efficiency by actually spinning faster than the crankcase.
The automatic transmissions do the exact same thing .. except it does it through speed - torque conversion. The job of a torque converter is to automatically engage & disengage the right gears in the proper ratio by using a specific system of bands engaging and disengaging the hydraulically operated clutch pack - this is what replaces the clutch that's operated manually.
All this isn't something magical that's supposed to happen by itself. This whole process is able to happen through the use of gear reduction where the bigger gears that rotate a little slower are exchanged through the clutch for a smaller set of rotating gears to increase the speed of the drive wheels.
I hope you understood it, because I did - and if I can understand something, then that just means I was the last one to understand it and everyone is on to something else & something newer .. but it's okay.
