Tips to Compare Small and Mid-Size Cars

Posted: Sep 21, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Small and mid-sized cars have their own set of issues when it comes to comparison for purchasing purposes. Comparing cars you are considering buying can be a good way to get and overall sense of the price to value ratios of these types of vehicles. The more intelligently you are able to compare these cars, the better you will often be able to find the car that meets your needs best. The following are some tips on comparing small and mid-size cars.

Fuel Economy
One primary motivating factor for people buying small cars is that they often get better fuel economy than larger vehicles. But that is not to say that they are all equal as regards fuel economy. They vary greatly between models. If you are able to find out the estimated gas mileage on a small or mid-size car, use that as a guide and simply compare miles per gallon or kilometres per gallon. It can still however be a good idea to test out a small or mid-size car to make sure that it really gets the mileage claimed. This is done by filling the tank, driving a certain distance, keeping track of the number of miles travelled as shown on the odometer, refilling the tank, and seeing how much gas was used. Then simply divide the miles by the gallons used to get miles per gallon. This type of test is especially important if you are considering pre-owned vehicles.

Passenger Space/Leg Room
Another big issue with cars in the small to mid-size class is passenger comfort and room. You need to make sure they don't feel too cramped. Is there enough leg room? Cars of roughly the same size can be designed very differently and this can affect the amount of space available in them. Get into these cars and feel how spacious they feel. Check if the seats are easily adjustable and how much room they leave people in back of them when moved backward. All of this should not be taken for granted but actually investigated by getting into the car.

Storage Space
Another space issue is storage. Again, trunk and hatch back space is not a given – it varies from vehicle to vehicle. Assess how many items you may be carrying and what types and then investigate how much cargo or storage space different models offer. Also, consider the balance between passenger and storage space and whether these are in some way interchangeable (for instance with a hatch back).

Features
Features such as the sound system, console features and stylishness, glove compartments, AC and heat, lighting, seat belt and air bag options, and so on should all be taken into consideration. Compare them with regard to usability, comfort, and safety. A convertible roof is a big feature that can affect all kinds of things – head room, stylistic issues, how much AC you will rely on, and so on.

Looks
Follow your sense of taste and style as regard looks of cars of this size. This should probably take a back seat (pun intended) to basic issues like safety and gas mileage, but it is important. There are a number of ways to approach this – comparing new cars by modernness and sleekness of their looks, colour options, and how conservative or liberal their designs are.
