Toyota Innova Review

There are SUVs, there are MUVs, and there's Innova. Toyota has come up with a new genre IMV (Innovative Multipurpose Vehicle), for their new breed of people carriers. India, the Innova will replace the completely outdated Toyota Qualis. With Innova, Toyota has set a new benchmark in terms of design.

The car has raking windshield upfront with a sweeping bonnet. In the back however, except for the loud tail lights, everything else is minimal. The high waist line and the huge size of the car make the wheels look inadequate. What makes the car appealing though is the huge space it promises and delivers.Toyota Innova offers both petrol and diesel options with the Innova. The 2.5 liter common rail diesel churns out 102 bhp at 3600 rpm and 102 Nm at 1400 rpm. The 2 liter petrol engine offers electronic fuel injection with 132 bhp at 6000 rpm and 181 Nm torque at 5600 rpm. Unlike the diesel, most of the action is packed higher up in the rev cycle in the petrol engine. The diesel returned 10.5 and 12.7 kpl in the city and highway respectively, while the petrol returned 7.7 and 11.4 kpl for the same.

Shorter gear ratios and peak torque at very low rpms ensure that the Innova surges ahead effortlessly. There is very little turbo lag with a very refined driving experience at cruising speed. But above 6000 rpm, it is a completely different story. Toyota Innova Review noise levels are very pronounced with every pot hole threatening to upset the car. But again the Innova surprises us with a top speed of 179 kmph, which it is eager to reach. But poor visibility and huge size make parking the car, a nightmare. Double wishbone suspension in the front, and 4-link suspension at the rear, make up for a comfortable ride. The Innova is very wide with good leg room and seat height. Combined with quality padding and finishes and twin air cons for each passenger it is the ideal people carrier.

SRS airbags and ABS are available only in the top variants. Other standard safety measures are of course available across all models. As the first car in the IMV category, the Innova has set a benchmark in all aspects of automobile designing. Improving the safety features and rear visibility could see Innova competing against even luxury saloons.
