Toyota is working to price hydrogen car at $50,000

Posted: May 11, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Toyota has worked around the cost of its fuel-cell vehicles by reducing cost up to 90 percent, since last decade. Now it hopes to price its first hydrogen model car for $50,000.

The first model will be a sedan with driving range equal to a gasoline-powered car, "with some extra cost," Yoshihiko Masuda, Toyota's managing director for advanced autos, tells Bloomberg News. However, still there is a big hurdle, that it to cut the cost of making a hydrogen powered car below $1 million mark; where the cost has to be reduced by 50 percent - to be able to meet the expectation and demand in future.

Simple reason: "We don't lose money with introduction of the vehicle," Masuda said.

Toyota is finding ways to bring down the price by reducing platinum use to only one third. It is also bringing out ways to find cheaper thin film used in the fuel cells and the carbon-fiber hydrogen fuel tanks.

Anthony Tribunella, the director of Auto relief group says, "After a long time - it's a delightful respite from the damaging news Toyota has been dealing with. Hydrogen car by Toyota and at a price of $50,000 would be really interesting to see upon; while GM loses its ground and Honda leads in this segment."
