Changes will mean that owning an uninsured vehicle will be illegal whether it is declared off the road or not, so that people are not able to be tempted to drive without paying a Car Insurance Premium . If you own a vehicle that is declared off the road for tax purposes, you will have to do the same to be exempt for car insurance reasons. At the moment it is only illegal for a driver to have an uninsured car if they are driving it, which puts the odds of being stopped while committing this offence in the favour of the driver. This way it will be easier for police and authorities to crack down on these road users who make life difficult for the rest of us.
Drivers will receive a letter to remind them of their lack of car insurance and will then receive a fine of £10, which can rise to £5000 for repeat offenders.
