Used car in Whitby part two

Posted: Dec 26, 2009 |

In the previous article we discussed some of the new laws introduced by Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, and we briefly discussed about buying a U.S and rental vehicle in general. In part two of this article I would like to share with you some of the key reports dealer uses today to assess a vehicle's accident history and lien registration.

Car Proof report – What is a "Car Proof report" you ask? Car Proof is a company that offers data reporting service in Canada, with its pool of data streaming from various sources including insurance companies, provincial lien registrations, and motor vehicle license offices. It builds a comprehensive background check on a particular vehicle. Everything from the vehicle's lien registration province, to odometer readings, to accident amount from insurance claims. It is a helpful tool for both dealers and customers, the cost of the report is $40 Canadian, and it is delivered by web browser.

Read the report carefully, in the first section of the Car Proof, it should consist 3 to 4 pages regarding lien registration. In this section a consumer should look out for which province the vehicle lien was registered with. For example if you are buying a vehicle in Whitby area, the lien registration should read "Ontario" not "Quebec". If the vehicle has a lien from the province of "Quebec" you should further investigate the vehicle's accident history and mechanical condition. This can be best achieved by hiring a private and trust worthy mechanic to look under the body frame and paint condition. Due to different legal obligations a vehicle from Quebec often are accident repaired, or frame damaged vehicles that has been shipped to Ontario. If the dealer disclose the fact it is a Quebec vehicle, and offer you a big discount, it will be up to you at that point to make the purchase or not.

The next section of Car Proof or section 5 is the United States & Canadian History summary. In this section Car Proof attempts to run a brief background check on items such as abandoned, fire damage, hail damage, rebuilt, salvage from the U.S data sources.

In section 6 it focuses on import records from Canada or U.S it will show if the vehicle was imported from U.S, and its import location and date.

In section 7 Car Proof focuses on odometer readings, if there is any recorded discrepancy in the vehicle's odometer reading, it should show in this section.

The most important section of the report is in section 9 or Canadian accident and collision estimate data. This section will show you if the vehicle has been in an accident before, and the amount for the accident repair. If the vehicle was repaired privately without reporting to police or insurance company, chances are the repair bill shouldn't be that high. And with a pair of trained eye, you can easily tell which section of the vehicle was repaired from the accident. Please keep in mind any accident repair or estimate amount usually are higher than what consumer expects. For example if you drive a Honda Civic and your front bumper was in a minor collision and require replacement. This can easily cost you up to $1500 in repair bills include parts, labor, body shop, clean up, rental car fee. So don't be alarmed if you see an amount of $1500, it is most likely a minor bumper change. One should be concerned if a vehicle's repair cost is close to $10,000.
