When going to search for a used car, everyone's least favorite part is the salesman. Why is this? Well, I guess it is because of the stereotype that they will usually attempt to sell you anything on the lot, good or bad, and at the biggest profit for themselves with no concern to you let alone saving you any kind of money.
Usually the price they give you on a car will not be the correct value of that vehicle, so if you know a certain type of vehicle you're looking for you should find out the bluebook value before the salesman tries to tell you that the car you are looking at is $1000 or whatever price more then what it's real value is at the time.
Another great trick they try to pull is that they had other people already looking at this particular vehicle so if you want it we best do the deal now. You know it so happens that everyone is looking at Yugo's today!
Never, ever flash your cash or rush to put money down as a down payment. If you do, you may not be able to negotiate the price to a more reasonable figure. This is definitely a disadvantage - especially if the price they are asking is high compared to the blue book.
Always remember that you have the ultimate say in whether to accept a deal though. For example, you should be prepared to walk away if the salesman seems to be giving you a line of well you know what it is! With this self-discipline required to keep your interest hidden from the salesman rather than showing the salesman that you want this vehicle so bad that you'll listen to everything and anything he suggests, you may be able to get a great deal.
Another good piece of advice is to not be led into different topics as you shop. Keep the questions and discussions on the vehicle you are looking at. It's a tactic they will use to not answer those tougher questions about the used car you are looking at. Plus you should really write down your questions and check them off after they have been answered this way you know you get all the questions that you wanted answered.
Check the car out for accident history too. Carfax advertises this service. Check with the dealer you are visiting to see if they will allow you to look at the history for the used car you are thinking about getting. If they don't want to help you out with this, beware because the car may have some serious problems.
Don't let the salesman talk you into those add-ons that will end up costing you a bunch of money and that you don't even need.
When going used car shopping you really need to watch the used car salesman, not all of them will try and trick you into getting a vehicle you may not want and that will cost you more. But if you go in there aware of what they might do you will avoid mistakes!
