Fuel prices across the country are shocking people into looking into ways they can improve fuel economy. While it might seem like buying a new hybrid vehicle or subcompact that doesn’t use a lot of fuel would be the best solution to this problem, for many people, that simply isn’t an option. For one, if you need your truck or SUV in order to do your job, whether it is in construction, towing or hauling, there are few new vehicles that can offer a significant fuel economy increase. The second point is that the depreciation on a brand new vehicle can easily eclipse any savings that might be seen as a result of reduced fuel consumption.
It’s clear that the most practical option is to take steps to improve the fuel economy of the vehicle or vehicles that you already own. This might seem like a tall order, particularly if your cars or trucks have large displacement engines, or a substantial weight. It might feel even more hopeless if you have to pull a trailer full of heavy gear or cargo. However, there are some things you can do to help alleviate the pinch at the fuel pump, without making substantial changes to your car or truck.
Running a synthetic motor oil can make a noticeable change in the amount of fuel that your vehicle consumes during normal operation. How does it work? Part of the advantage of running a synthetic oil in your car or truck is that this type of lubricant offers superior viscosity when compared to standard petroleum-based oils. What this means is that the oil causes far less ‘drag’ between engine components, allowing the rotating assemblies inside your engine to move more efficiently. With some types of petroleum oils, the thickness of the oil, especially in cold temperatures, can slow down the engine to a small degree. While you may not notice it while driving, allowing the engine to move more freely by switching to a synthetic oil can improve fuel economy between 2 and 4 percent. Over the course of a year, the savings can really add up.
Changing to a synthetic doesn’t require any special filters, and this type of lubricant is compatible with all engines, regardless of the era in which was it made. Synthetic oil may be one of the easiest, and best decisions you make to improve fuel economy without breaking the bank.
