Vehicle Maintaince Before A Trip
With spring break and summer in a couple of weeks many families are planning road trips. Before taking off there are a couple of important things to check out on your vehicle before you pull out of the driveway.
The first thing I do is to make sure that my vehicle is on a flat and level surface in order to get a good reading on all my fluid levels. I personally like to change the oil before every long trip weather it needs it or not. It really doesn't matter if it is due for a change yet or not but I like to change it anyway.
While I have the hood up I like to look over all the hoses for cracks and leaks and then I look at the belts to see if there is any evidence of cracking and if they are to loose or too tight. A good way to tell if the tension on a belt is good is to twist it. If you can twist the belt more than a quarter turn that means that it is to loose and if you can twist it less than a quarter turn it is too tight. If it is too loose you can get some squealing and some slipping and things won't work properly. If the belt is too tight you can burn up the bearings in one or all of the units that are run by the belt.
Now on to the other fluids. Check the windshield wiper fluid to make sure it is topped off. My wife and I are originally from the north so when adding fluid I needed to know how cold it was going to be. The last thing you want is to need to use the fluid to clean the windshield and it be frozen. I have seen some products out there that you can use to run the heated anti-freeze thru a tube that wraps around the lines that feed the fluid to your wipers the keep things flowing. Check the break fluid to make sure that it is topped off as well. Check the transmission fluid. Automatic transmissions have a dip stick in the engine compartment and a manual transmission can be checked while you are changing the oil. Check your anti-freeze overflow bottle to make sure it is filled to the proper level. Too much in the bottle can result in an overflow of the overflow bottle, too little can result in your engine overheating.
I also give all the wiring a quick once over to see if there are any wires loose or bare. The last thing I do is that I take my vehicle down to the tire shop and have the tires rebalanced and rotated. This is very important to do at the proper intervals even if you are not taking a trip.
All of these check don't take a very long time to do and it gives you peace of mind that you have done everything you can to make sure you have a safe trip. Enjoy and drive safe

There are 3 different cables that make up that system. There is one that goes from the hand lever inside the car to a part that I call an equalizer. What it does is adjust itself to pull on each of the other cables equally. From there a separate cable goes to each rear wheel. Those 2 cables were the only ones that I had to replace. The parts were around 65 dollars at our local parts store.
