SMA Vehicle Remarketing, previously known as Scottish Motor Auctions has set itself an aggressive target to overtake Manheim in the next three years. Manheim is currently the leading car remarketing supplier to dealerships, franchises and manufacturers.
SMA has a sixth auction centre due to open in Birmingham in March to help the company achieve its goal of reaching 180,000 units in the next 12 months. The Birmingham site consists of 10 acres and is set to contribute 45,000 units per year. SMA is close to signing a deal on land in Manchester and is also seeking sites in Bristol and London both inside and outside the M25 – to build auction centres.
SMA's Managing Director, Bob Anderson declared his aim to be the number two in volume in the UK within three years or so. Anderson stated that another three or four sites the same size as the new Birmingham site will be needed to meet its sales expectations. Bob Anderson said, "With online growth you don't need so many physical assets; you need fewer but larger sites than can store cars and accommodate de-fleet and PDI services. Online sales accounted for 5% of our volume in November and it's increasing every month. Within 18 months to two years it will account for around 20% of our volume."
