The Indian auto market has recently been the focus of major car manufacturers. This is because of the projected increase in the demand for passenger vehicles in the country. It has been predicted that the country will become the third largest car market in the world in the near future.
Earlier this month, Nissan and Renault joined hands in expanding their business in the auto market of India. Renault brought its popular Logan compact car to the Indian auto market under the umbrella of Nissan. More recently, it is the tandem of Volvo Cars and its parent, the Ford Motor Company, which will test the Indian auto market.
Both Volvo and Ford have subsidiaries in the country and these are already planning the steps that the companies will take in their further involvement in the country’s auto market. According to the plan, Volvo will be targeting the upscale or the higher end of the auto market segment. This is because Volvo is known to be a producer of luxury vehicles. On the other hand, Ford will be producing cars for the midsize segment. The company already has the Ford Fiesta in place to compete in the growing auto market in the said country. The Fiesta is the second compact car that Ford has introduced for the Indian auto market. In the past, the Dearborn, Michigan based car manufacturer has marketed the Ford Ikon in India.
Paul de Voijs, the Volvo Car India Managing Director, said in an interview that “future launches in India could be a part of our global synergy with Ford Motor.” While the companies will be focusing their attentions to different segment in the car market, de Voijs maintained that they will be working on a common platform for some of their vehicles. “We could bring in vehicles having shared technologies (platform) with Ford Motor to increase our presence in India,” said de Voijs. This means that some Volvo and Ford vehicles will be having the same features and, in some cases, share the same components such as electrical parts like a Volvo relay or in some cases even an entire suspension assembly. To what extent Volvo and Ford will be sharing the same platform is yet to be announced by the companies.
The Ford India President and Managing Director Arvind Mathew has this to say about sharing the same platform with Volvo: “Common platform models with Volvo cannot be ruled out in India.”
Volvo announced that their first offerings in the Indian auto market are the S80 and the award-winning XC90.
