What to Expect From Hid Kits

Car enthusiasts all talk about it excitedly, like it’s the next best thing besides sex. Even though I won’t delve into the numerous mistakes with that statement, let’s consider what HID kits are and what should a first-time buyer expect.

HID kits consist of a replacement lighting system for your car. While a typical car lighting system includes a pair of bulbs, ballasts and starters, HID kits only contain a bulb, a ballast and a starter. For a better understanding, a ballast is just a device that modifies the amount of current passing through an electric circuit. This sometimes called control gear, which can be simple resistors, usually found in small neon lamp, or complex parts like the ones found in fluorescent lamps. The signal to start the light comes from your car; let’s say you turn on the switch for your headlights. The starter accepts the signal, and then it is sent to the ballast. The current is altered, which now goes to the high-intensity discharge or HID bulb. This now causes light to be produced.

Remember that the HID bulbs are different from ordinary light bulbs. Bulbs of HID kits don’t have filaments, and are filled with gases and salts instead. The produced light is characterized by a bluish white or whitish blue hue, the color of which is affected by color temperature of the kit. Higher Kelvin ratings on the kits produce bluer color for the lights. The rating that most resembles ordinary sunlight is in the bracket of 6000 to 9000K, which seems to be the optimal settings for preferable driving conditions. However, going for higher Kelvin ratings would make your car look cooler with a tint of blue.

Installing is refreshingly simple and hassle-free. Just find a stable spot to mount the parts, following the neat diagrams and pictures on the manual. HID kits are expected to withstand usage longer that your conventional halogen lamps. Without filaments that can be broken, your car can go through all the road pot holes and hazards and still not damage your HID lamps. In the event that the bulbs do die out, replacing is as easy, if not easier than replacing regular halogen light bulbs.

HID kits are wonderful replacements to your standard automobile halogen lighting system. Don’t forget that HID kits only come with one bulb, starter and ballast. For a complete lighting system replacement, you need two HID kits.
