Challenged Chef Tastes Sweet Success at THE One

Posted: Jan 31, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

After successfully completing his probationary period in January 2011, hearing and speech impaired Franklin Galano Corpuz was employed as a full-time Pastry Chef with THE One Qatar, becoming the home fashion brand's 16th challenged employee.

However, it wasn't all plain sailing for the 38-year-old Filipino who previously worked as a Pastry Chef for a 4-star hotel in the Philippines.

Franklin made international headlines in October last year when he was unjustly stopped at the airport by a Philippines Immigration Officer who banned him from boarding the plane to Qatar due to his disability. He and his wife - who is also a deaf person and the President of the Philippine Federation for the Deaf (PFD) - reported the incident to the Bureau of Immigration and eventually he was given the green light to travel, joining THE One Restaurant team for a three-month probation period.

"Our purpose is to incorporate those with challenges into the workplace, encouraging greater social integration while providing them with a sense of purpose, empowerment and independence, not to mention an income. In our experience, these individuals have a tremendous amount to offer, inspiring staff and customers alike. Franklin is a great addition to the team and we are thrilled to have him on board," said Gabriel Salome, Country Operations Manager for THE One Qatar.

When Franklin isn't baking delicious treats and pastries, he enjoys playing basketball and helping his colleagues learn sign language.
