Earthquakes 8.0+ Increasing Frequency

The whole world seems to be coming apart at the seams, unless you listen to the "experts" at the USGS. In a recent artical by CNN, experts down played the the noticable increase in earthquake activity. See the article here: http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/science/04/07/earthquake.frequency/
But after reviewing the statistics given on the USGS website, http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php
it becomes apearant that the devil is indeed in the details. Certain "Facts" can be misleading. For example, The USGS states that the "average" number of earthquakes magnatude 8.0 or greater has remained about the same at about one per year since 1900. That is a comforting statement coming from such a respected scientific organization. But "averaging" the frequency of earthquakes since 1900 tells you nothing about frequency "trends". When analized decade to decade or year to year, a more sobering picture emerges.
Perhaps the USGS feels compelled to present the "Facts" in such a way as to calm fears and reduce panic. Although it apears that the total number of earthquakes (or earthquake frequency) has remained the same, the frequency of large earthquakes has dramatically increased over the past decade.
Using the USGS statistics and other resources, we have compiled the following data:
Number of Earthquakes Magnatude 8.0 or Greater:
1950 – 1959 = 3
1960 – 1969 = 3
1970 – 1979 = 3
1980 – 1989 = 4
1990 – 1999 = 6
2000 - 2009 = 13
Another sobering statistic is the dramatic rise in the death toll from all earthquakes.
Total Deaths From All Earthquakes:
1980 – 1989 = 58,880
1990 – 1999 = 114,646
2000 – 2009 = 471,012
2010 = 225,511
The death toll in the first half of 2010 alone is almost half of the previous decade.
Sometimes the numbers don't speak for themselves and are hidden to "protect" the public.
