Labor Should Organize a Springtime 2009 Million Man March on Washington,dc

Should labor organize a million man/woman march on Washington,DC during the Spring of 2009? Yes, it should!

What is the labor I am referring to? Well, consider the unions that are left in the country such as the automotive unions, the Teamsters, the United Mine Workers, etc now consider the 2 million plus individuals who have lost jobs during 2008. Next, consider those that will lose jobs during the first quarter of 2009, let's say may another 500,000 to 750,000 individuals. Next throw in the families of all the unemployed. Yes, I would say that a million man/woman March on Washington, D.C. is possible and needed!

It is needed to show those entrenched Washington politicians who are in the pockets of the corporations who they really work for and who they really should fear. Yes, I said fear!

You see during the 1800s corporations were not as powerful as they are today. Don't get me wrong there were plenty of battles between labor and private detectives, law enforcement and the military but corporations had a limited life span, they were chartered for a set number of years and for a particular purpose. In Santa Clara v. Southern Pacific Railroad where the Supreme Court Reporter inserted that coporations had 14th amendment rights. Here is where everything started to change and the corporations became more powerful. The 14th amendment passed after the Civil War gave freed slaves equal protection under the law and due process of laws. Now it was applied to corporations. Corporations had the right to challenge regulatory laws, they had the right to challenge any attempt to limit their "lifespan". So what does that mean? Take a look around at these corporations, some global in nature, that have grown so big they are considered by politicians as "to big to fail". Another issue is that the board of directors of a corporation owes a duty to the shareholders to make as much money as possible. This is why we are in the present situation.

Greed, it is all about greed and power. These corporations want to suck every nickel they can out of the American consumer. The credit card companies really do not wish for the American consumer to get out of debt. Think about it, if everyone in America suddenly cut uo their credit cards and refused to use them ever again. Do you think the credit card companies, which are publicly traded, might have a problem? Do you think they care about you or your families? They don't! If there were civil unrest these mega millionaires would be on a flight out of the country and to Switzerland.

But back to the March, do you think it would send a message to the politicians and their corporate masters.  Time is running short to take back the country. It is time to place people before profits. It is time to make sure that no one in America is homeless. It is time to make sure that no one in America goes to bed hungry. It is time to make sure that everyone has health insurance just like the members of Congress. Again, people should come before profits!

I am trying to organize a "We the People" march on Washington DC in the Spring of 2009.
We have similar interests except my focus is on Politicians vs Citizens. We need to rally to take our country back and make our legislators answer to us. We are not and never were a democracy - we are a republic. It is our duty to run our country and enforce the constitution. An easy way to clean up DC would be to demand drug testing, credit checks, background checks and IRS tax info. If "we the people" have to subject to such checks in order to pay their salaries, we should demand no less from them. I think that would eliminate about 35% of them who can be replaced by citizens.

I am attempting to find out what permits would be required. Any info anyone can provide would be appreciated, especially if we can join forces with other groups. The more marching the more powerful our message. Thanks!

Apparently, at least one of those who have commented on my article is confused as shown by her reference to contacting Beck, Hannity or the noxious Coulter. These are right wing crazies who do not value the american middle class. They have essentially decklared war on the american Middle Class and are nothing more than cheap shills for corporate America. What is needed in this country is less emphasis on making a profit and more emphasis on helping people. We could start with nationalizing health care, something that Canada, Germany, England and France have done successfully. If we simply rolled back defense spending this could be easily acomplished. Why does almost 50% of all tax dollars go to the military? Simply put because we can not mind our own business! Why not, because, once again, corporations stand to make to much money by supplying the military or by rebuilding when we blow things up or by seizing natural resources that do not belong to us!

I agree with Kathy's comment on "We the People march on Washington D.C. in the Spring of 2009". I would like to say the thought is well put together. One thing I would like to see happen is that in order to get more people involved, would be to have "We the People" marches setup at state capitals across the nation. It will be more feasible for people who have lost their jobs the ability to get to their state capital much easier (e.g. someone traveling from California to Washington), and more people could rally within their own states. There would be 10s of millions who would have the chance to march, thus sending a bigger impact, major news coverage across the country, and then bring it to the forefront of making Washington come clean, and getting rid of all the beurcratic nonsense that got us into the mess in the first place.

Kathy, I like your idea of a "We the People" march on Washington, D.C. This is a great idea, and I think there would be more impact if there were 10s of millions marching outside federal buildings in each city of the United States. This could be done by organizing a date and time (planned on each time zone in the U.S.) to coincide with each other at the same time). This would send an immediate message to all government officials in D.C., plus more people would be able to attend these State marches, because of cost factor without having to fly to Washington. With layoffs, and the cost of plane, hotel trips, etc., would cut down on the number of those willing to partake in this march. I would suggest contacting radio and news talk show hosts, such as Glen Beck, Shawn Hannity, writer Ann Coulter. These people should have contacts that can point us in the right direction. Anyone else, wanting to join in on this plan, please step forward, and make your voices heard. WE ARE THE PEOPLE, and it's apparant the last two administrations are NOT listening. The latter of the two seems to be taking things a bit further, which reflects something of socialism/communism.

Myself and many other laid off Union and non-union workers are trying to do the same thing. Although I do agree with marches at state capitols across the nation, the effect will not be the same. I say this because all of the local marches will only make local news, whereas 500,000 plus people in D.C. will make International Headlines. I understand that travel expense would be high, but think of this:
There are many "labor friendly" companies out there who I am sure we could get to donate motor coaches and such, there are laid of teamsters who would volunteer to drive them. There are many owner/operator truck drivers who I am sure would show their support (trailers double as bunk houses to save on lodging). Many Unions, charities, organizations would donate the food and water. So don't say that it's not feasible to have everyone meet in D.C., because that's just being lazy and not standing up for our jobs!
The march should be not just about labor and the unemployed, but "Made In America!" and to stop free trade and product dumping in our country. I'm not sure how people would contact via email, but I entered mine, any questions feel free to ask!
