Vancouver Preparing for Next Olympics

Vancouver Preparing for Next Olympics

With the Summer 2008 Beijing Olympics finished, the world has now turned its attention to the next global games. The upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver, Canada. With only two years to go, the city has already begun preparing to do its duty as the host location. With lessons learned from this past Olympics, Vancouver is sure to pull off a successful set of winter games.

The 2010 Winter Olympics will last for seventeen days and involve more than 5,000 athletes and officials. Its host city will be the largest urban area to have ever hosted this event. While Vancouver itself prepares venues for the games’ indoor events, planning for the outdoor competitions is taking place two hours north of the city limits. Since Vancouver itself is a sea-level city, events like skiing and bobsledding will be held in Whistler. A total of nine venues within British Columbia will host the games’ competitions.

The Vancouver Olympics are being planned by the Vancouver Organizing Committee. Members of this organization were present at the Beijing Olympics to observe how the games were carried out. One thing Canada learned from observing China is that media attention is a vital part of the Olympics. At least 10,000 media personnel are expected to be certified to work at the 2010 games. There will also be two major media centers in addition to the competition venues. Canada also learned from China that you cannot be too prepared to play Olympic host.

Vancouver has already accomplished a lot towards its Olympic planning goals. Construction of the games’ venues began over a year ago, and some are already available to athletes. Additionally, the games’ mascots have been selected for the purposes of a grand marketing campaign. Volunteer recruitment has also begun as it will take approximately 25,000 unpaid helpers to make the games a success. Additionally, the Vancouver 2010 website, www.vancouver2010.com, has information for those looking for paid positions as part of the games. You can even conduct a job search and submit your resume online.

Vancouver hopes to provide an intimate setting for the 2010 games. They want visitors and athletes to truly feel like they are a part of the global community. To encourage attendance at all events, the Vancouver promoters are hoping to recoup some of the undistributed tickets included in the 30% of sales devoted to members of the “Olympic Family.” A major problem at the Beijing games was that many of these seats, which are claimed by the International Olympic Committee, were never filled. This left large, awkward gaps in the stadium crowds.

Beijing definitely pulled off an exceptional Olympic competition. Now, Vancouver knows what kind of impression it is expected to make. Thankfully, the games’ planners are already underway making sure the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics are the best the world has ever seen. Ticket sales for the 2010 games will begin as early as this coming October, and those anticipating an exceptional Winter Olympics are already counting down the days.
