Walk for Your Rights! 5th Annual Human Rights Walkathon Saturday, March 5th 2011

Posted: Feb 23, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

United for Human Rights, Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking, Youth for Human Rights Florida and the Human Rights Group are gearing up for the Human Rights Walkathon 2011.

The Walkathon will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011 in N. Straub Park, St. Petersburg, FL beginning at 9am.  It is a FREE family event, committed to raising awareness about the rights that were set forth and proclaimed in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th, 1948.

Human Right #15, from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says - "Everyone has the right to a nationality, including that no one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality nor denied the right to change his nationality".

In many countries around the world people are denied the right to their nationality and their citizenship. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that there are about 12 million stateless people around the world. A stateless person is not recognized as a citizen by any state. Citizenship enables a person not only to vote, hold public office, and exit and enter a country freely, but also to obtain housing, health care, employment, and education. It is vital in order to live a decent human life. Stateless people are denied that right.

The Human Rights Walkathon organizers believe that discrimination, war and intolerance can be ended through education.
