3 Skypephone S2x Mobile Phone Review - An Affordable Phone For Keeping In Touch Overseas

Posted: Aug 23, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Whether you have relatives in another country, you travel frequently on business, or you just want a new way to chat with your mates online without maiming your wallet, the 3 Skypephone S2x is an ideal choice for you. Well built and well equipped, it has a variety of fun features that won't break your budget.

Appearance:

Combine sturdy, quality black plastic with attractive chrome accents and you have a simple, yet respectable looking mobile. Another nice design feature is its aluminum battery cover, which feels solid and cool against the palm. Its 2.2 inch QVGA screen is a bit on the small side, but it's bright, crisp, and vivid. Its keypad is a bit difficult to press due to its tiny buttons, however, which can make texting a pain. At 95g, it's a bit too big to carry about in your pocket, though.

Its user interface is fairly user friendly, with a simple grid of icons. The phone is also pretty responsive, with no glitches, sluggishness, or weird inconsistencies. One of the best things about this phone is that all you need to do to be able to make free Skype calls is simply log in with it as you would on your computer. There is no complicated synching, installations, or glitches to worry about.

Sound:

Unfortunately, this Skype phone doesn't come with a whole lot in terms of sound. There is no radio, no 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the sound itself isn't all that great in the headphones they provide. Call quality is decent, though not perfect. However, its music player supports a variety of formats, and if you can find an adapter, you can enjoy them using your own headphones.

Camera:

Its camera is fairly basic too, with only two megapixels and a LED light. This is okay for taking snapshots on the run, but it's not strong enough to capture anything passable in anything but brightly lit areas. With a flash, it might have been decent, but as it is it's a fairly weak little camera. Video recording is fairly decent, though the principle regarding its weak light still apply.

Internet Connectivity:

When it comes to staying connected, the phone provides you with almost all of the basics, including Bluetooth, 3G HDSPA, and GPRS, though it lacks wi-fi and GPS. You also get SMS and MMS, though, again, texting is a bit tricky due to its tiny buttons. Its browser and email client are relatively decent and easy to navigate, however.

Memory and Talk Time:

With 272 minutes of talk time and 333 hours of standby, you can use the mobile in confidence that it isn't a device that will keep you chained to the charger. Its 180 MB doesn't provide you with a vast amount of space for storage, but you can add more via a microSD card that should leave you with enough to safely store your music and photos without trouble.

Verdict:

All in all, the 3 Skypephone S2x is an idea phone for those who make a lot of overseas calls. Its customer friendly user interface, bright little screen, and sleek design are also decided pluses. However, this is only real redeeming feature; its shoddy camera, poor sound quality, and lack of wi-fi make it a mediocre device in many respects.
