Acer Stream Holds Its Own Amongst Heavy Competition

Posted: Nov 09, 2010 |

The Acer Stream is a much welcomed handset that comes from the Acer stable following a number of largely unsuccessful phones that ran on the old Windows Mobile operating system. Acer seems to have learnt from its mistakes as the new phone now features the widely used Android operating system. While this would certainly make the phone very appealing, it also makes the phone very user friendly. The new phone certainly reflects the time that Acer has taken in understanding the market and the needs of its consumers.

The Acer Stream has features that would certainly strike fear in the minds of its rivals like HTC and Samsung. This is mainly because the phone features an AMOLED capacitive touch screen display that measures 3.7 inches. Despite the large size of the Acer Stream, the phone measures just 119.5 x 63 x 11.2 mm in dimensions and weighs at just 140 grams. This makes it more compact yet feature rich than many of its main rivals, including the new iPhone 4. The display being an AMOLED display gives out rich and vivid colours, and the viewing angles are also increased dramatically over the older technology displays. AMOLED also makes the Acer Stream bright enough to be able to see in direct sunlight.

There are four navigation buttons below the large screen and these can be used to control Home, Back, Search and Menu. Among these only the home screen button is a hardware button. All the other buttons are touch sensitive, but still give plenty of feedback to the users when using them. Music control buttons are also provided below them that would certainly be a hit among the music lovers. The phone has a 5 megapixel camera that is capable of taking pictures with a resolution of 2560 х 1920 pixels. Autofocus and image stabilization are the other standard features that come with the camera. However, the best feature of the camera has to be the 720p video recording capability.

The phone has a number of options for satisfying connectivity needs. Among them are the 3G and Wi-Fi options that let you connect to the internet and enjoy download speeds of up to 7 Mbps. The Acer Stream features the same Android 2.1 Éclair operating system that was seen in the previous Liquid A1 handset from Acer. The Android 2.1 operating system runs without any problems on this phone and that is thanks to the incredibly powerful 1 GHZ processor. To take advantage of the phone's ability to play HD videos, the phone now comes with a HDMI port that you can use to connect your HD devices with. Should you decide to use the traditional way, you can use the Bluetooth 2.1 and micro USB to do so. GPS is another connectivity solution that is provided by this phone allowing you to make use of services such as Google Maps.

The phone has been launched in the UK and is available for around £400, which makes it more affordable than many of its main competitors.
