An Unbiased Review of the Palm Pixi

After the recent release of the Pre, Palm is at it again with the imminent launch of the upcoming Palm Pixi. This new Smartphone has been labeled as the downgraded, cheaper version of the Pre which targets a younger audience. Here are some of the good and bad points of the newest Palm product in the mobile phone market.

The Good

Obviously, the Pixi’s claim to fame is that it can pretty much do everything the Pre does while having a cheaper price tag. This means that it is ideal for people who crave for the performance and appearance of the Palm Smartphone without necessarily burning a hole into their pockets. Although Palm is yet to confirm the actual pricing of their new device, we’re guessing that it’s going to be under the 100-pound region.

The Bad

Although the Pixi can be accepted as a Pre alternative, the fact still remains that it is not at the same level as its older brother. Most of the features of the Pre have been downgraded to accommodate a cheaper price tag as well as a more compact design. Among them include the downsized screen (3.1 inches to 2.63 inches; 320 x 480 to 320 x 400 pixels), the downgraded camera (3.15 to 2 Megapixels), and of course, the absence of Wi-Fi connectivity.

The absence of the WLAN option may definitely cause more than a few issues for the on-the-go execs who need to constantly check their emails throughout the day. Nonetheless, connecting via GPRS, EDGE, and 3G are still options on the Pixi which means that there are other internet connection options – just not free Wi-Fi.

Another problem we have with the Pixi is that it does not have an external memory slot. Users will have to settle for the 8-GB internal memory. Although this is not at all shabby, it would have been better had there been an option to upgrade your memory to say, 16 or 32 Gigs.

And Finally

At the end of the day, you can still say that the Palm Pixi is a commendable Smartphone that has a decent set of features on board. Although it may not be up to par with the Pre, it is still able to deliver the basic functions of a typical Smartphone (with the exception of Wi-Fi connectivity). However, the best part of the Pixi is that it is a cheaper alternative for folks who need the functions of a Smartphone but don’t intend to spend a fortune on getting an iPhone or an N97. That being said, we still give the Pixi two thumbs up.
