A significant change in the mobile carrier industry has come about today March 21, 2011.  After much negotiation, communications giant At&t has merged with it's long time competitor, T-Mobile.  This 39 billion dollar acquisition without doubt is a very big deal, and will impact current and future customers and other wireless carriers alike.

Consumers will just have to sit back and wait this one out to see the end result and impact of this merger.  Analysts are predicting huge changes in the very near future from wireless services providers.  Among the many changes we can expect, will likely be the restructuring of many current popular plans.  Specifically unlimited Internet broadband plans, rumors are that it's very possible this will be the major change.  For instance, until now T-Mobile has been the industry's loose canon, offering unlimited data plans as a way gaining ground for it's market share.  The major carriers much rivaled fight to gain supremacy has been very competitive, to put it mildly.  Unlimited data may be no more, or at the very least will likely cost consumers considerably more for these type of services.

Consumer options shrink a bit with now with only two major players, Verizon Wireless and At&t.   As demand grows in this sector, marketing for these type of services will undoubtedly heat up in the months and years to come.  You can be sure of this, positioning is key at this time for all wireless providers.  For instance, this morning we looked at Wirefly the online leader offering plans from all major carriers.  Low and behold, the carrier options on Wirefly's site as of today is one less carrier, At&t!  While on T-Mobile's site you can proudly see the coveted At&t logo!

Expect lots of strategic moves by all parties involved in this very fast growing industry.  Another major change and real plus for T-Mobile is the ability to offer their customers Apple products.  As smaller players Sprint, Nextel and even regional providers like MetroPCS scramble to adapt to these fast moving changes.  It will be interesting to see the end results of this acquisition's impact on the mobile communications industry.  Will it be At&t or Verizon Wireless, that comes out on top after the dust settles?  Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether this deal will have any positive effects if any, on all of us that rely on these essential services every day.
