The world leader in smartphones Nokia has just announced a new series of social networking smartphones that gets launched with a confirmation of the new Nokia C5 that has been lingering in the online rumor corridors for more than a month before the announcement. We had thought this will be among those announced at the recently concluded 2010 Mobile World Congress but it was until early March that it finally got official.
The official photos just confirmed what has been rumored that this is an entry-level smartphone in a candybar form factor running the Symbian S60 v3.2 on a 600 MHz ARM11 processor. Apart from its distinctly styled body with a chromed trim that you can find in many mobile phones aping the iPhone chrome trim, there's really nothing outstanding on the C5 in terms of hardware specs.
Software-wise, its edge comes from a tandem of 3G high speed radio with social networking features that make online presence a real pleasure.
Socially Aware Features
With 3G and HSDPA/HSUPA data connectivity, online activities such as social networking, media file sharing and simple downloading are worth the effort. The C5 has a new phonebook feature that lets you directly access your facebook friends directly right from your phonebook contact list. Its home screen displays three of your favourite SNS friends allowing you to launch a call, IM, texting of SNS access right from the home screen on the fly.
It has a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS and Ovi Maps 3.0 that allow drive and walk direction navigation and real time location sharing with your SNS friends. Media sharing over YouTube and Flickr becomes a breeze as well as downloading all the apps you need from the Ovi Store.
Standard Hardware Features
A petite body weighing a pocket friendly 89.3 grams and measuring 112 x 46 x 12.3 mm has room only for a small 2.2 inch TFT LCD QVGA screen with 16 millions colors. Imaging gets a conventional 3.2 megapixel with LED flash, fixed focal length focusing, 15fps VGA video recording and a secondary front facing camera for 3G video calls.

There's an internal memory storage of 50 MB with 128 MB RAM and nearly unlimited phonebook fields and entries. This can be expanded up to 16 GB from its microSD slot. The handset comes with a standard 1050 mAh BL-5CT Li-Ion battery that gets your up to a generous 12 hours of talk time and 26 days on standby when fully charged.

The Nokia C5 is expected to ship to its European markets and elsewhere in Asia and the Middle East starting in the 2nd quarter. Its dual band UMTS specification does augur its availability in the North American markets at this time. The Nokia press it announced a SIM-free price of €135 before taxes and subsidies and will come in two body colors you can choose from – white and warm grey. Its retail package will include a 2GB microSD card and will have access to the Ovi Store as well as free GPS navigation.
