In some countries, the phone number or the mobile number that you choose upon registering and buying a line, is the mobile number that you will have when you stick with one Telecommunications company. When you switch to another provider, you will have to change your number. This is the case for people in the Philippines, which is the country who has the most number of text messages sent in a year. But in many areas in the world, like Australia, you can switch carriers and still retain the same number. This is what is known as phone number portability.
Phone number portability provides convenience to both the caller and the owner of the number. The number of the owner need not change his contact information every so often. Especially with the way technology changes, every year more than dozens of cellular phone models are introduced by the big phone manufacturers every year. When a person changes his mobile phone number, he needs not tell every single family member, friend, business contact or acquaintance that he has a new number. Also, for the callers, they can easily associate the number with the person.
In choosing ones number, we always choose those that are easy to remember. I always check on those with double digits so it's easier to remember. To some though, they really study and choose their numbers very carefully. These people, especially the Chinese believe in luck that comes along with anything you do. Everything has to be auspicious.
But how far would you go to buy the phone number of your dreams? Would you believe that in an auction in Doha, Qatar, the most expensive phone number was sold? And believe it or not, the number was 666 6666. It was sold last May 2006 for 10 Million Qatari riyals or $2,750,000. Most of us believe that the number 6 is the number of evil, but do you know that the Chinese believe that the number 6 represents profitability. Well, I guess the people in Qatar agree. The number 666 6666 stole the limelight from the number 8888 8888 that was previously the most expensive phone number owned by Sichuan Airlines.
