Building on the success of the original HTC Desire, the recently released Desire HD is among the most advanced smartphones currently available. Sporting the latest Android 2.2 OS, along with a powerful 1 GHz processor, it provides an impressive spec list. However it does not sacrifice aesthetics for features.

The handset itself is substantial in order to accommodate the 4.3 inch screen. It measures 123x 68x 11.8mm so it is actually quite slimline, and surprisingly light at 164 grams. To navigate the HTC Sense UI, the responsive LCD capacitive touchscreen is called upon, and thanks to the fast processor, is lightning fast. It is also fantastic at displaying pictures and videos, thanks to 16 million colours being displayed within 480x 800 pixels. This also makes it a great platform for gaming and surfing the web. An accelerometer sensor is also included, and this allows the screen to be viewed in both portrait and landscape forms.

Thanks to Dolby Mobile and SRS the sound enhancement, the sound quality of the HTC Desire HD is stunning, so it also makes a great standalone multimedia player.  The versatile internal media player is capable of supporting numerous video and music file formats, whilst additional entertainment features include a selection of games and a radio player.  Handsfree communication is carried out thanks to a built in speakerphone system along with a 3.5 millimetre audio jack.  Of course, MP3 and WAV files can be assigned as ringtones, meaning users can hear the song of their choice when the phone rings.

In order to store data such as multimedia files, there is a handy 1.5 GB of internal storage provided as standard.  However, there is also a microSD card slot which comes with a pre-installed 8 GB card, although this can be replaced with a card of up to 32 GB, meaning users can potentially store thousands of music tracks or numerous video clips etc.  The photocall feature has been given the HTC Sense treatment, not only displaying a photo of the caller, but also their birthday and Facebook status.

Browsing the web relies initially on 3G coverage, whereby an HSDPA connection provides lightning fast speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps.  When in the same proximity as a wireless Internet router, users can take advantage of WIFI connectivity for an enhanced browsing experience.  The HTC Desire HD also comes with Bluetooth and micro USB connections as standard which allow users to connect the handset to compatible hardware devices.

One of the more notable hardware features of the HTC Desire HD is the eight mega pixel digital camera.  Operating at 3264x 2448 pixels, it takes superb quality still images, and features autofocus, face detection and a dual-LED flash.  Geo-tagging is also provided, which functions thanks to GPS.  As an added bonus, the camera can also shoot 720p video footage, and thanks to DLNA, users can stream their high definition footage to a compatible television, and enjoy their handiwork on the big screen.

The versatile Android 2.2 operating system works in conjunction with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, meaning that even the most demanding applications are handled with ease.  A lightning fast user interface also makes the HTC Desire HD a pleasure to use.

With a Smartphone market dominated by specific models, the HTC Desire HD offers a head turning an alternative those who want to stand out from the crowd, and has a spec list that puts most other Smartphones to shame.
