The main selling point for a mobile phone these days seems to be how good it looks, the mass market for mobile phones tends to comprises of image conscious geeks and fashionistas and they all want a standard set of features but not look like they’re carrying a house brick around with them.
Well earlier this year at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain an Israeli manufacturer showed off a mobile phone that was so small that a credit card dwarfed it’s size. The Modu, a modular concept phone was small enough to insert into a number of different shells for different functionality. For instance if you wanted to use the phone as a camera then it would slide into it’s camera housing.
This helped cut down on the bulk of the phone by allowing the user to select what feature set they wanted and leave the rest at home or in their bag. A press release from the company states, “Throughout the design process of Modu, the emphasis has been on keeping the phone small, light and compact in order that Modu's innovative approach could be realized.”
This first of a new breed of mobile phones has not gone unnoticed too, the company has recently been given the World’s lightest mobile phone record in the Guinness Book of Records, barely tipping the scales at 1.41oz (40.1g), the aim of the company was to make mobile phones that are “invisible items” that we carry on our person everyday, citing house keys and watches as similar items.
It wasn’t just the record books that took a shine to the revolutionary phone; there are many manufacturers like Texas Instruments, SanDisk, Magellan Navigation and audio specialists Blaupunkt all becoming partners with Modu who could no doubt make a whole range of different shells for the Modu to slip inside of.
With this phone on show this year many critics have welcomed the many changes in the mobile phones industry, with last year’s Apple iPhone adding a few welcome changes and Nokia’s latest mobile computing platforms like the N810 Internet Tablet and N95 it is clear that mobile phones are becoming much more than just phones but jack of all trades devices that save on pocket space and money spent of bespoke devices like GPS and digital cameras.
