Like it or not, last year the Apple iPhone got a lot of attention. The mass media hype was fervent with store employees whooping and cheering customers who had queued up for days prior to the “Jesus phone’s” launch. This amount of interest was warranted since despite its shortcomings (lack of 3G, high price, no picture messaging) the iPhone won praise over its new and revolutionary interface, a technology called Multi-touch which acts like an advanced touch screen where you can pinch the screen with two fingers to move a photo around for instance.
To say the iPhone blew away the competition in the mobile phone market is a bit of an understatement, in the months since its release there have been many phones that have borrowed features, from the general shape to little thing such as an accelerometer which can detect whether the device is being held in portrait or landscape. Right now I’m going to cover two of the main pretenders to the iPhone’s throne and whether any of them are likely to topple the current king…
Samsung Armani Phone
The Samsung Armani phone is the latest in the long line of collaborations in the mobile phones market. As a result phones similar to this one are highly stylized and appeal to the fashion conscious, there’s sometimes a danger with this type of phone that it becomes style over substance.
Well not with the Armani, for starters they have improved on the iPhone’s rather jaded 2MP camera and given it a 3MP sensor a much more up to date specification. The phone is also a touch screen model and with most phones the responsiveness of the key can be frustrating, hence Samsung including VibeTouch, where the phone emits a sound and vibrates when it is touched. The phone carries its fashion routes through to the case the phone comes in; an attractive leather case protects the large screen.
This phone will obviously sell well with the fashionista crowd but has enough but has enough going on under the hood to keep most Mobile Phones geek happy.
LG U990 (Viewty)
LG have had a history of strange names for their mobile phones as of late, with this the Viewty, their previous efforts included a phone called the Chocolate. Silly names aside the Viewty has been touted as everything the iPhone wishes it could be, the camera has a 5MP sensor making it one of the industry leaders, as well as not only being capable of video recording it can record at 120fps so it can play back in slow motion.
The handset is remarkably similar to the iPhone and you could be forgiven for confusing the two at first glance, obviously a boon for LG who like Apple are relatively newcomers to the Mobile Phones industry. The Viewty can even handle high-speed 3G data unlike the iPhone’s sluggish EDGE network.
In general the Viewty is a genuine contender for the iPhone’s crown, with it also being available as a Pay As You Go mobile phone and not having to pay a premium on the handset as people see past the mist of the Apple publicity machine they are beginning to see the charms of the Viewty in a more positive light.
