Mobile phone technology has made huge advancements in recent years. Nowadays it is handsets which have become part of our daily lives.
Soon, there could be more to mobile phones than just cameras and mp3 players, if a chip company has their way.
Imagine the scenario, you’re miles from home and want to send a message to your spouse or children, or maybe you want to send your friends a little something extra to make them jealous of the fact that you’re on holiday.
Normally we’d just make do with a simple text message or a photograph snapped on your camera phone, but soon there could be a little something extra in your phone to enhance the experience.
Researchers in Germany have developed a chip which could offer users the chance to send ‘scented’ text messages through their mobile phones.
These ‘scent chips’ release smells relative to the users’ choice of text message – be it the scent of flowers or Christmas cinnamon – in much the same way as an air freshener you’d get at home.
The technology could pave the way for scented greetings on your mobile. Birthday greetings could now be accompanied by the scent of flowers or chocolates, although the real thing does sound more thoughtful.
Even so, the technology could prove popular with those who want to add an extra dimension to their text messages.
The likelihood is that you’ll need to own mobile phones that are compatible with this new scent chip in order to get the most out of all your senses; however there are several companies engaged in discussions about the possibility of applying the chips to their handsets in future.
So the idea of Smell-O-Vision could be nearer than we thought. And let’s face it, the idea of sending your friends’ the scent of an ocean breeze when you’re on holiday to add that teensy bit of jealousy sounds a tempting prospect, does it not?
