Motorola Quench – Making The Old Come Alive
Until we saw what Motorola can do with an antiquated Android 1.5 Cupcake, it has always been our first choice to get a smartphone with the latest version of its OS. The eight Android phone revealed by the world's third largest phone maker at the 2010 World Mobile congress is one such phone.
It's the Motorola QUENCH with MOTROBLUR, powered by a Qualcomm MSM7291A clocked at 528 MHz. It goes to show that the Android versions are really different platforms that can be tweaked to update its features and further confirms our suspicion that Google never had plans to have any upgrade path to its later versions. The new Acer Liquid e is another confirmation on that suspicion as it runs the new 2.1 Éclair with nothing new when Acer could have just offered an OS upgrade to the earlier Liquid it released last November.
With the QUENCH, it is plain an upgrade no longer matters. You have an Android running a 1.5 Cupcake that has some of the best features for an Android phone. We can now understand why Sony Ericsson is sticking to the same old Android 1.6 Donut on its XPERIA X10 because with its own Rachel/UX user interface, it can maintain an edge to anything running the Éclair. Even with an upgrade path, users may not want to upgrade but that means any porting to proprietary UI such as the HTC Sense, or the SE Rachel as well as the Motorola MOTOBLUR will disappear entirely with the new OS upgrade.
Defining a New Android Experience
The QUENCH comes with the MOTOBLUR which Motorola calls a content delivery service forming the core of the unique Android experience it is offering. It synchronizes your phonebook contacts, media content, messaging and email trail with your social networking sources in a single home screen location.
Entertainment offers another unique feature like media players that connects online with YouTube, TuneWiki, SoundHound and GoTv for you to access and download new media content sic while playing your favorite media together with 3rd party apps. There's also FM stereo streaming support.
It has a radical data input option called SWYPE feature from the same geniuses who invented the T9 predictive text facility. You only need to trace or swipe a finger across a virtual QWERTY on the 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen to spell the word you need. With the usual accelerometer and proximity sensors its WideVGA screens also features a rich Web browsing experience with pinch-zoom ability.
Other than these, the QUENCH is every inch an upscale Android smartphone that does everything else you see in smartphones on the new Android 2.1 Éclair. Among others, it's a 3G phone on the triple band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA and a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G. It has WiFi. A-GPS and the usual Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for local data transfers.
Imaging comes with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and CIF video recording at 25fps. Stereo listening on headphones gets a choice of using wired 3.5mm headphone jack or wireless Bluetooth A2DP.
Availability
Most of the new Android smartphones announced as early as December including those announced at the 2010 MWC including the Motorola QUENCH with MOTOBLUR will start shipping in the first quarter. The QUENCH will come in four body colors – while, black, purple and licorice. Its retail package will come with a free 2 GB microSD card in its retail kit. Just like all newly announced handsets, no pricing information is disclosed. But with its feature set, expect this to come in the same price point as other upscale Android smartphones.
