Google has reentered the phone production market with the Nexus S, the first phone to launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. We always love to see a good scrap between Apple and Google, so this post will compare the two performances in detail.

OS

The Google Nexus S breaks new ground for Android, running Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box.The iPhone 4, of course, runs Apple's own iOS 4.

Camera

The Nexus S and the iPhone 4 are tied when it comes to cameras. Both have 5-megapixels cameras with flash and auto-focus on the back, and front-facing VGA cameras for video calling. The notable difference is that the iPhone 4 can record 720p HD video (1280×720 pixels), while the Nexus S can only record DVD-quality video at 720 x 480 pixels.

Touchscreen

In this clash of the titans, the screen is a powerful weapon on both sides. The Nexus one has thel 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, and the iPhone 4 has Apple's new Retina Display with an impressive 940 x 640 res. If you want to stretch out your browser and videos on a big screen, such as watching DVD movies on these devices, we don't think you'll be disappointed. Of course, you need to install some dvd ripping software to help you convert DVD to iPhone 4, DVD to Android.

Processor and storage

The Nexus S and iPhone 4 also match in processors, both running at 1GHz, and RAM memory, both with 512MB. Something that is usually an advantage for Android phones is expandable storage, but the Nexus S takes a leaf from Apple's book, and offers only 16GB of built-in storage, with no microSD card slot. So for example, at $199 on a contract, you can get either a 16GB iPhone 4 or Nexus S.

Conectivity

The two handsets are quad-band phones with 3G/HSDPA. You'll also get Wi-Fi (up to 802.11n) and Bluetooth 2.1 whichever you choose with A2DP. The Nexus S has Micro USB connections while the iPhone 4 naturally uses the standard Apple 32-pin dock connector. The Google Nexus S also adds NFC, or Near Field Communication support, meaning it could be used as an Oyster or Barclaycard OnePulse-type touch payments.

Weight and Demensions

The Nexus S has a slightly narrower and thicker 124 x 63mm footprint, and has a depth of 11mm in comparison. it is bigger than the 115 x 59mm iPhone 4. The Nexus s weight is 129g that is lighter than 137g iPhone 4.

Talk and standby times

The Google Nexus S has a talk time up to 360 mins and standby up to 428 hours, and the iPhone 4 has a talk time up to 420 mins and standby up to 300 hours.

Conclusion

Is the Nexus S revolutionary enough to persuade you to choose it over an iPhone 4 ? Either of these phones would be welcome beneath our Christmas tree, especially since they're both insanely expensive. But it remains as true as ever that Android is more flexible than iOS, while iOS is easier to use. What's your opinion ?

You end up paying much less overall when you buy a smartphone with contract, but it also means you're locked into that contract and can't switch services, upgrade smartphones, or cut back on minutes without facing some sort of penalty (these restrictions are normally for the first 6 months of your contract). Generally, the price of Android smartphones without subsidy is around $300 to $500. The price with a contract starts with $0.01.
