An expert on mobile phones for over 10 years
The much anticipated Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic breaks new ground in becoming Nokia's first ever touchscreen phone. But the ideas certainly not new as it's over a year already since the LG Viewty was released and their have been many more since then - so is it any good ?
As mentioned, the touchscreen phenomenon has been around for a while now & the Samsung Tocco was without doubt the best selling phone of 2008, so the Nokia 5800 has to be good or it'll sink without trace very quickly and certainly leave Nokia with egg on their faces !
At first glance the Nokia 5800 has a good sized 3.2" display, a decent case size of 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm and weight wise it tips the scales at an acceptable 109 grams - nothing untowards there then. It's very Nokia like in it's appearance and has gently rounded corners to give it that "smooth" look.
It comes with a generous amount of "extras", something that was unheard of a few years ago. Within the box you get an 8Gb microSD, headset, lanyard, datacable, protective case, stand, spare stylus, TV out cable, mains charger, headset control & obviously user manual and quick start guide - Pretty impressive really considering the price.
Being part of the Xpressmusic range, you're ovbiously buying into an incredibly good music player as well as a mobile phone. The menu is very intuitive and the interface works either in landscape or portrait modes. As well as the MP3/WMA/WAV/eAAC+ player you also get a stereo FM radio with RDS. The 5800 also sensibly utilises a 3.5mm jack plug, so you can use a variety of headsets & therefore you're not restricted in any way. So feel free to spend as much or as little as you like in that department.
With a 3.2 megapixel digital camera with Carl Zeiss optics you can guarantee quality pictures & video with the MPEG4/WMV/3gp video player. View videos or stills in the gallery or view them direct from your TV screen with the TV Out cable that comes included.
The Nokia 5800 is a GPS device and can be used as a Satnav as it includes Google Maps. So you never need get lost again. The display auto-rotates to suit your desired choice to give you the perfect route home.
In all, the latest Nokia mobile phone is quite superb - good camera, great for music & a crystal clear display too. It is available now either on contract or sim free at The Order and is set to be a best seller for 2009.
