Nokia N8 Vodafone Review

Background

Nokia were once pioneers in the mobile phone market and have made some of the most iconic mobile phones of all time, but have really struggled with the concept of the smart phone and have been left in the dirt of Apple, BlackBerry and Android in recent years. The company's reputation for making slow and feature-poor smart phones has meant less and less people turning to Nokia for a solution.

The Nokia N8 Vodafone edition is Nokia's answer to that problem and sets to right many of the things that Nokia haven't quite got right in previous versions of the companies smart phone ranges.

Style and Design

The Nokia N8 comes in a wide range of bold colours which few companies are brave enough to use, making the phone look bold and bright and giving consumers a fair amount of choice when it comes to looks. There's nothing amazingly different about the N8 design itself though, the major difference between it and other recent smartphones is that the N8 has some bulk to it.

The N8 is quite a bit thicker than some people have come to expect from a smartphone and while it will certainly still fit in your pocket, the overall design is certainly larger than usual. This isn't a bad thing, however. It feels very sturdy in the hand and the design is durable and not too heavy. You get used to the extra thickness very quickly and its perfect for people with larger hands.

Features

The Nokia N8 Vodafone has a wide range of different features that we've come to expect from a modern smart phone that has the app store and Android to compete with, and the N8s feature set proves that Nokia have sized up the competition and have begun to think about exactly what they can do to make up for the time they've spent with more disappointing handsets.

Among the many abilities of the Nokia N8 Vodafone, the standout feature is by far the camera. This is a great choice for Nokia to focus on as it's something that so many other smartphones get so terribly wrong. The 12 MP camera on the N8 is simply stunning, and I'd go as far to describe it as the best camera phone ever made at this point. It can pictures that easily rival, if not surpass, low to mid range compact cameras and comes with a wide range of features making it perfect for people who want their phone to double up as a camera.

Software

The newly designed Symbian OS powers Nokia phones, and the V3 release that comes with the N8 has made some big steps forward when it comes to really embracing the touch screen and some of the important touch screen centric control features like mutlitouch that are demanded by today's smart phone users.

The system isn't nearly as good as it could be with some updates and refinements but it's easily a slick as Blackberry OS and thanks to the N8's impressive hardware it feels a great deal faster, as well. Hopefully Nokia will continue to improve Symbian in the future.

Overall the N8 is great handset and the first smartphone from Nokia in a long time that feels right, has great features and software that can live up to the capabilities of the stuff under the hood. If you're looking for an alternative to the 'big 3' of smartphones or if you simply want to own a phone with an amazing camera, the N8 should be your first choice.
