Nokia Unveils Its Latest Smartphone - N9

Posted: Jun 25, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Nokia has been going through some rough patches over the past few months, or one could say, the first half of 2011. Here we are talking about the Smartphone market with tough rivals gaining pace and creating intense competition. These companies include Apple, HTC, Google, Samsung and a few more. Some time back, Microsoft and Nokia announced that they had signed a pact, which would ensure Windows Phone become the "principal" operating system on Nokia's line of gadgets.

So what's so special about this new Smartphone from Nokia? Well, its technical specifications say it all:

  • A 3.9'' curved AMOLED with FWVGA Resolution
  • An 8 Megapixel camera with autofocus and HD Quality Video Capture
  • MeeGo OS
  • 1GB RAM
  • Weighs around 135g
  • Memory storage options in 2 different models - 16GB/64GB
  • 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU
  • Other miscellaneous features include: polycarbonate unibody, built-in accelerometer, proximity sensor, uses microSIM cards.

Connectivity is not an issue in the N9 as it includes: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 2.1, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, TV-out, NFC (near field communication). The design of this beauty is just fantastic and is nothing less than "awesome". After launching this new model with the MeeGo OS, there is still doubt as to why Nokia decided to shift to Windows Phone 7.

The N9 features an all new "Swipe" function which enables users to switch to the home screen with just a swipe, no matter which application you are using at that moment. Nokia also claims to provide users with three home views which actually allow the users to access applications, receive notifications as well as social-network updates.

I cannot tell much about the application package Nokia would be providing with N9 as of now, but a few things are sure about the applications that will run on the N9:

  • The browser's default search page is Bing
  • Skype integration
  • Easy sync  with various social networks through the Contacts Application
  • Universal search
  • Camera Interface is interesting, though still could've offered more
  • NFC functionality

Overall, I feel if more time was given to use the phone, I could've said whether the phone was truly awesome or just another Nokia Smartphone. I would seriously want to stare at that beautiful AMOLED screen and handle the impressive sleek body. We all can only hope that Nokia will preserve its Premium MeeGo OS and build on it, because the N9 could seriously be a new start for Nokia, a fresh change for it in the Smartphone market.
