Will Cellular Phones Work On Airplanes Flying At 30,000 Feet?

For the longest time, we were told cell phones had to be turned off and left off while we were on an airplane. There were a variety of reasons for this including that the signal would interfere with the plane's computer and it would cause the plane to crash. Another reason was that cell phones would be unable to receive a signal while the plane was in the air. The final reason is that the electronics of the plane make getting a cell phone connection impossible.

On Sept. 11, 2001, people who had their planes hijacked took out their phones to say their goodbyes to the people they loved because they knew they would never see them again. There were dozens of people on the phone that day, making numerous phone calls, and according to the people they talked to, they were able to stay on phone for a very long time. While clarity is unknown, it is now known that calls were not being dropped because service was lost. Here's something else to think about: there are several airlines that have telephones built into their seats. If you want to use them, all you need to do is swipe your credit card to use their phone. Bear in mind, you'll pay $5 for every minute you're on the phone. There's just one thing... how can you get a connection in the air?

Will Cell Phones Work While On A Cruise Ship?

Just like airplanes, it wasn't that long ago we were told cell phones would not work when on a ship at sea. However, current research shows this isn't necessarily the case. There are several companies with global satellite communications that allow persons to make or receive calls while they are on a cruise ship. However, before a person tries this, they should speak to their cell phone provider's customer service to find out about the rates on a per minute basis and what kind of ship to shore connection fees that they can expect to be charged when using their phone on the ship. Bear in mind that the majority of islands have decent phone coverage. Still, there are circumstances where you are calling outside the country area; thus, more connection fees are probable. Before you go using your used Blackberry, talk with a customer representative about International calling and you.
