About 160 million cell phones will be thrown away this year. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States claims that less than 20% of cell phones are recycled each year. This is despite the fact that over 96% of their weight is recyclable. Considering the various dangerous chemicals used to manufacture phones, like mercury, arsenic, lead, and cadmium, a landfill is no place to dump your cell phone.
The EPA also pointed out that the materials used to make cell phones take energy to construct them. That energy used produces carbon emissions. They estimate that recycling a million cell phones would avoid enough carbon emissions to equal taking 1,368 cars off the road. Each recycled Bell cell phone prevents 66 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. 100 million recycled cell phones can save enough energy to power over 180,000 Canadian homes for a year.
There are plenty of places to recycle your cell phones, often for a good cause as well as saving the environment from carbon emissions.
Modern technology is meant to connect the world, not help destroy it. Enjoying the luxury of mobile technology also comes with responsibilities. Recycling you Bell cell phone not only prevents unnecessary waste and energy consumption but also provides opportunities for you to give to those less fortunate.
