Samsung Omnia HD i8910 Phone

The Samsung i900 or Omnia as it is sometimes confusingly referred to was a good and fairly steady seller for Samsung throughout 2008. And, as you would expect Samsung are pushing the now familiar model further by releasing a newer and much updated version.

Usually, manufacturers often try and just breathe a bit of extra life out of many of the existing parts / software of the old model and take the economy route - Not so with Samsung as the new i8910 Omnia HD (high definition) is a light year away in terms of technology than the old outgoing model.

The most notable change (and this is unusual) is that both handsets have completely different operating platforms. The original Omnia ran on Windows 6.1 whereas the new Omnia HD is a Symbian S60 device. Samsung have improved this by overlaying their TouchWiz interface on top which makes for a familiar and satisfying user feel. Obviously the software is open for upgrades and the addition of further applications like any other smartphone and you can access Microsoft exchange servers for your e-mail requirements. Anyone who has used a Samsung phone with the TouchWiz interface will tell you how good it really is & with "haptic" feedback from the touchscreen, you can feel what you're doing too.

The new Omnia HD isn't just a boring old smartphone though like so many are. It surpasses many of it's rivals in many terms including the huge auto-rotating 3.7" display that gives fantastic colour and resolution and makes it an ideal SatNav device as it has an inbuilt A-GPS receiver and comes pre-loaded with GoogleMaps. The camera is also an outstanding 8 megapixel affair that makes even the worst photographers of us seem more than capable !

As you'd expect, the Samsung Omnia HD can play virtually every conceivable file format known to man and the memory is expandable upto a truly whopping 32Gb. Web access ultra fast thanks to 3G and it has WiFi too so hooking up in any wireless hotspot is child's play too.

Samsung mobile phones are always top quality devices and the i8910 is no exception to this rule. It's available on all Uk networks from quarter 2 2009 and SIM Free from The Order

Most manufacturers have been a bit slow on the uptake with "toughphones". Nokia tried it a few years ago with a massive brick of a device & then subsequently gave up on them even after the enourmously popular 5140i. Sony Ericsson tried it with the R210 but that was about 7 years ago and they too gave up on them. Time passed and then last year Samsung unveiled the M110 Solid......& it was a massive hit !
