The Definition Of An SD Memory Card

Posted: Sep 18, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Audio players, cellular phones, and digital cameras all make use of the Secure Digital (SD) memory card to store their various data. It is where text messages, photographs and video footages are stored from the different recording mediums. With the size almost the same as your average postage stamp, the SD memory card comes in various capacities and operating speeds. As a general rule, the larger the holding capacity of the SD memory card, the faster the operating speed. These are the usual configurations of the different memory cards available in the market.

These flash memory cards are similar to the memory sticks and flash drives for computers, but these are configured to be compatible with their different application mediums. The different digital devices have their own compatible memory cards to suit their respective operating formats.

From the older multi-media card specification, the SD card format was derived. In this modern age, the SD memory card has become famous and widely used in terms of flash card formats. A copyrighted protection mode is built on every "secure digital" component memory chip of the SD memory card. The implementation of the Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) was made in order to ensure that protected materials are not subjected to abuse through profligate reproduction.

Images, video footages, music selections, and other data can be stored and transferred to personal computers with the use of the SD memory card. A lot of the new models of computers have already built-in card readers, but cheap external card readers may be bought for those without such built-in feature.

With the many different and confusing number of flash memory cards in the market, it is important that you determine exactly which card reader is compatible with your SD memory card. There are card readers which have multiple connections which can be adapted to different memory cards.

There are also mini SD and micro SD cards that have come out in the market with specific uses for devices which accommodate such smaller versions and you have to watch out for the configurations of these miniature versions for your personal use as these are entirely different from the standard SD memory card and its connections.

The SD memory card has a safety feature which appears to be a lock switch at its top left portion. You can slide it open which allows reading or writing on the card. When slid in closed position, it only allows reading of the card. This is a protection feature which keeps the card from any unintentional overwriting.

These memory cards also come in different capacities ranging from 1 GB to even 20 GB. The capacities of these cards are dictated by the manufacturer's settings relevant to the digital devices they are intended for. An MP3 player, for instance, might be designed for 500 MB cards only, in which case, cards that are 1 GB or even higher in capacity could not be accommodated by such device. Usually, such devices can accommodate lower capacity memory cards instead.
