Remember having a mobile phone so bulky it had to be kept in the car? Back when mobile phones were called car phones they were big grey monstrosities which only business people could afford, and were far too heavy and cumbersome to carry around. Thankfully, due to modern technology, they were phased out.

But now the car phone is back, albeit smaller, neater and lighter. The Motorola M990, also called the Smart Rider, has been specifically designed for use on the road.

Expected in June, the handset looks more like a satellite navigation system than a phone, and there's a good reason. The M990 has a relatively large display - 320x240 pixels or 2.8" – to allow easy viewing of the integrated GPS software. It is definitely more suited to a vehicle than a pocket, and will be ideal for delivery drivers, taxi drivers or anyone else who spends a lot of time on the road.

As well as GPS, the Smart Rider also encompasses voice recognition software, Bluetooth, MP3 player, email and internet. It can be wired into your vehicle's electrical system, to save the battery, and can be connected to a microphone, speakers and antennae. The handset can then be unplugged and removed when you leave the vehicle unattended.

The M990 can hold up to 4 user profiles, useful if the vehicle is driven by more than one person. It can also react to traffic reports and suggest diversions if accidents or roadworks occur. Finally, it can be connected to a fleet management system for easy vehicle tracking.

All these features make for a mobile phone no professional driver should be without. While prices haven't been confirmed, by looking online you'll be able to find the best mobile phone deals for this or any other model. Mobile phones of all models come with excellent call packages.

Credit: Dread it
By: J Tillotson | 04/09/2008 | Credit
Credit is a lovely word. It conjures up images of free money, goods which you haven't paid for, and reckless spending. Debt isn't such a nice word. It makes you think of shivering around a Calor gas fire in a dark living room, unable to pay your electricity bill because all your money is being taken up with debt repayments. Endless red letters and phone calls demanding money you haven't got. But the two terms often go hand-in-hand.
