Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC has just released the second generation handset in its Touch series – the HTC Touch 2. After months of speculation online as the HTC Mega, the new smartphone finally assumes the Touch 2 name that HTC claims to be its first ever smartphone to use the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. With the renowned HTC TouchFLO sitting as its user interface, the Touch 2 promises a more engaging mobile phone experience than its predecessor. But that should be expected, coming as it does 2 years and four months after the first HTCV Touch made is world debut.
Smarter Features
The HTC TouchFLO on the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform does make the navigation around the HTC Touch 2 features quite intuitive and easy to do. With a multitasking OS, that should make it even more engaging. You get homescreen widgets that allow instant one-touch access to you’re your favourite phone apps and files as well as social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google Apps, YouTube and online weather updates right from the homescreen.
With 3G and HSDPA/HSUPA giving high speed internet data connectivity, the Touch2 should be a breeze to use. Unfortunately, the Touch 2 isn’t fast enough to maximize the experience one expects from a Windows 3G handset. The one complaint is its sluggish response.
This didn’t discourage HTC from putting the latest features despite a slow CPU engine. It still has the usual Bluetooth 2/1 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi 802.11b/g, GPS receiver and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Good thing this is a budget smartphone so it really won’t make sense harping about a sluggish response amidst all those smarter features.
Budget Features
HTC evidently chose to take a cheaper route designing the second generation Touch2. One could be forgiven if the impression generation from the phone is that of a 2008 model resurrected with a new OS that seems to tax its CPU engine, like installing a Windows Vista on a 2005 PC model. Considering that the Touch2 is using a Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU clocked at 526 MHz, one has to wonder what HTC did to give it a sluggish response compared to other Windows handset.
For starters, you have a washout out 2.8” display that’s just too large for a mere QVGA resolution. Using Windows made its even less appealing with just 64k color depth. And when you realize it’s just a resistive touchscreen, the impressions seems more correct that HTC should have released this handset a lot sooner.
Either that, or HTC deliberately designed a budget feature set on a budget smartphone alright. You get a 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera that can be a saving grace with fast enough shutter speeds though the images it takes remain washed out in the open daylight. Indoor shots are where it manages to deliver better but more artificially saturated photos. Its camera is certainly not the Touch2’s strongest quality.
Availability
Expect the HTC Touch 2 to hit European markets before the year ends. As a budget entry level smartphone, expect the major mobile networks to carry this free with an affordable monthly plan.
