The New BlackBerry Torch 9800 - A New Touchscreen Phone From RIM t
The Blackberry Torch 9800 is the handset that many phone fans have been waiting for, a handset that combines RIM's core principles of a Qwerty keypad and great messaging facilities alongside some superb new touchscreen technology.
With regards to looks, the Blackberry Torch 9800 continues in the footsteps of previous models in that it is a well built device that sports many typical Blackberry style elements. The Qwerty keypad on this model is a slider design, making more room available on the fascia for the new touch screen. The slider feels very well constructed, unlike many alternatives currently available. When opened, the keypad adds a further 37mm to the phones overall height of 111mm. This is plenty of room to make the keypad functional, without making the handset feel oversized. The phone is fairly similar in dimensions to the Bold series when closed, although the 161g weight does make it feel a little on the heavy side. For Blackberry users used to the optical trackpad for navigation, it is still present on this model, and is one of only a few features on the front of the handset. Others include the Call, Menu, Back and End buttons. Above these you will find the new display, a 3.2" capacitive touch screen capable of displaying a 480 x 360 resolution. Alongside many new smartphones, the screen does feel a little dated, but on the other hand it still looks clear and is an advancement on some of Blackberry's more recent offerings.
The internals on the Blackberry Torch have also been updated along with the phones external elements. A 624Mhz processor keeps everything moving along at a fair pace, this is teamed up with 512Mb of RAM. A big plus point is the 4GB of storage memory that also comes with the phone, rather than relying on the consumer purchasing an external media card. The old favourite micro SD card slot is still present however for people who require that little bit more space for their media files. The Torch supports sizes up to 32GB. Blackberry handsets always boast excellent connectivity and this model is no different, sporting both quad band GSM/EDGE and tri band 3G/UMTS. Locally WiFi is also offered, so hooking up to you own personal network or WiFi hotspot will give you the fastest experience online. The Blackberry Torch seems to be the handset that RIM were hoping to produce with the Storm and Storm 2. An excellent touchscreen accompanies the full Qwerty keypad to offer users a functional and appealing handset.
The Blackberry Torch and the Nokia X5 Purple are coming soon.
