The Palm Pixi: For the Young and the Young at Heart

Earlier this year, Palm broke through the Smartphone industry with the launch of the critically acclaimed Palm Pre. They’re now at it again with the new Palm Pixi which hopes to build on the success of its predecessor. However, this time around, Palm seems to be taking quite a different approach. Aside from being much cheaper than the Pre, the Pixi looks like it’s going to be marketed to the younger consumers. Here are some of the reasons why we believe this is so.

All About Looks

At first glance, you’d definitely see some semblance of the BlackBerry Curve on the Pixi – only with a stylish makeover and a trip to the cosmetic surgeon. Although it still has that business-like vibe that has made the Pre so popular among suitcase-carrying execs, there’s a more playful and casual swagger on the Pixi. It’s also much lighter than the Pre at only 99.5 grams, and also happens to be a lot slimmer with only a 10.9-milimeter thickness.

However, one of the main attractions of the Pixi is its Artist Series line. Instead of settling for the same old sleek black outer shell, users will have an option to choose from 5 funky designs that are surely as unique as they come. We don’t think we’ve seen anything like this in the past and if all goes well, this should garner a warm reception from the younger market segments. The 5 designs include the Hummingbird, Two Fish, Skull, Skin, and Red Barn themes that were all designed by a variety of artists.

Speed and Performance

In terms of speed and performance, the Pixi should be able to match the hustle and bustle lifestyle of users who have become so accustomed to multitasking. Similar to the Palm Pre, the Pixi will also be equipped with Palm’s own webOS mobile operating system. This particular OS has garnered considerable acclaims in the past and any upgrades on it will definitely be welcomed with open arms.

The only disappointment we have about the Pixi is the omission of Wi-Fi connectivity on the device. This means users will have to wave bye-bye to WLAN hotspot connectivity on the Pixi. Although there are other internet connectivity options on the Pixi, we are still firm believers of Wi-Fi’s superiority over the rest (mainly because it’s free!).

Overall Appeal

It is a fact that the Pixi is not at the same level as the Pre. The latter holds a more impressive feature set and is Smarter in a number of aspects. However, once you consider the difference in price, you’re definitely going to give the Palm Pixi a second look. Moreover, the Artist Series is surely something that will set you apart from all the boring designs out there that almost look exactly alike. If you’re looking for something else while also being on a budget, then the Pixi is definitely the mobile for you.

By: Simon Drew | 19/11/2009 | Cell Phones
Function over form. That has been the principle behind many of Research In Motion’s (RIM) Smart Phones for many years now. RIM is the maker of the Blackberry family of mobile and smart phones. This probably is the greatest reason why the corporate world prefers Blackberrys over other brands on the market.

Many consider the Bold 9700 as the best model yet offered by Research in Motion (RIM), makers of the Blackberry line of smart phones. With every new release of a Blackberry smart phone, it seems to appear that a compromise somewhere in its features and specifications is in the offing. Be it lack of memory, no 3G or Wi-Fi, a poor performing camera or less than satisfactory OS.

The Blackberry Bold 9700 combines the best in the Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Tour 9360 in an elegant and slimmer device. Not much may have changed from the older versions in the inside and out but the subtle yet bold changes and upgrades to a more industrial and contemporary look would surely be a hit. You can bet the Canadians have pretty good ideas of how beauty should be manifested.
