The Samsung Beam I8520 – Super Amoled With Pico Projector

Posted: Mar 15, 2010 |

After lingering the online rumor corridors as the Samsung "Halo," it's now official.  You have the new Samsung Beam i8520 and it's confirmed it has the pico projector as shown in the 2010 Mobile World Congress In Barcelona.  Running the latest Android 2.1 Éclair on an undisclosed 800 MHz processor, the new i8520

This Beam stands out as the only smartphone to feature a projector at the MWC. One has to wonder what it would be good for but we can imagine board room presentations need no longer bother with those projectors. Now sales people can just tuck in a 30 minute PowerPoint presentation in their pockets to the amazement of their prospective clients.

Features Up Close

The Beam is your basic 3G phone on a tri-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (900/1900/2100) and a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/19000) on the 2G network.  It has the usual WiFi 802.11/b/g/n with DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for local data connections.  You also get SatNav functionality with a built-in A-GPS receiver with Google Maps.

Your multimedia experience starts with capable media playback for all the popular audio and video files formats including DivX and Xvid video, stereo FM ratio with RDS and DNSe for stereo widening and surround sound effects.  It ends with stereo listening options on either wired headset form its 3.5mm headphone jack on wireless A2DP stereo earphones.

Display features have few rivals with a brilliant 3.7-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with multitouch, 16 million colors and WideVGA resolution (800 x 480) under a scratch resistant glass surface.

It comes with the usual accelerometer for auto-rotate viewing and a 6-lumens Pico Project facility that can project a 50-inch image of whatever is on the screen or being taken in its camera and video.  Samsung uses a Texas Instrument DLP module in the WideVGA resolution to power the projection which is a bit washed out in normal lighting condition but is comfortably clear and acceptable under dark conditions.

Samsung has taken advantage of the relative thick body at 14.9mm to get an imaging feature that knows only a handful of rivals out there such as the similarly forthcoming Sony Ericsson Vivaz and XPERIA X10.

You get an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, face/smile/blink detection and geo tagging from it's a-GPS receiver.  There's high definition 720p video recording at a cinema-grade 30fps with video light that simply tops anything Sony Ericsson has to offer at this time. There's also a secondary VGA camera for your 3G video calls.

Phone memory gets a generous 15 GB with 512 MB ROM and 384 MB RAM with microSD expandability for up to 32 GB.  It comes with a hefty 1800 mAh li-ion battery which when fully charged can provide up to 14 hours of talk time in 2G and 630 hours of standby time – arguably the longest battery lives in the market thanks to its energy-efficient super AMOLED display. No information on battery life when projecting but the demo didn't make any such issue apparent.

The Samsung Beam i8520 uses the latest Android 2.1 Éclair platform with the Touch Wiz UI and is a socially aware smartphone with social networking integration allowing live updates to Facebook and Twitter.  You get pre-bundled Google apps and access to the online Android app store as well.
