The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness: Purely a Gimmick?

The new Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness is unlike any other mobile phone in the market today. In fact, at first glance you wouldn’t even think that it was actually a mobile phone. It looks more like a high-tech remote control than a mobile. However, as much as this device is being marketed as yet another revolutionary device from Sony Ericsson, it too has received its fair share of criticism. There are some circles that are claiming that this device is nothing more than a gimmick, and that it offers no functional value whatsoever. Here’s our take on this one of a kind mobile phone.

Too Far

In case you don’t already know, the main feature of the Xperia Pureness is that it is the first mobile phone to ever have a transparent display. This is definitely something we didn’t see coming. Mobile phones with outrageous features such as HD displays or ultra powerful 12-Megapixel cameras we understand. Heck, we’ve even tried our best to appreciate the multitude of fashion mobiles such as the Sony Ericsson Jalou D&G or the Samsung Armani.

However, we think that a translucent display is just plain useless. Although it may be totally awesome, we just don’t see the logical reason behind such an audacious piece of technology. But then again, we have seen a number of far out mobile phone features in the past – I guess we have the Japanese audacity to thank for that. But surely, the Xperia Pureness’ transparent display will be one of the top contenders on that list.

Too Pricey

What’s worse is that this bizarre piece of technology will cost a lot of money. Sony Ericsson definitely put in a few million pounds in the research and development of this technology and surely, they’d like to cash in on their investment. Unfortunately, this translates to a rather overpriced device for the consumer. Although Sony Ericsson has yet to confirm the actual retail value of the Xperia Pureness, internet reviews have pointed to a price tag of roughly £530 for SIM-free or pay-as-you-go subscribers.

That’s just about the same amount of money you’ll need to shell out for the 32 GB iPhone 3GS which retails at £538.30. I for one would rather pay this much money for a device that has been tried and tested and continues to be among the best Smartphones in the land, instead of splurging on a concept mobile that doesn’t provide enough bang for every buck.

Too Soon to Tell

But then again, we will have to wait and see until more information on this device is released by the company. As of yet, all we have is a minute and a half video that samples the navigation of the Xperia Pureness. Other than that, all we have on the mobile’s specifications and features are all rumours and speculation. It wouldn’t be fair to all out judge this device without even knowing the entire story.

However, unless there are more than just a few mind-boggling surprises on the features of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness, we still don’t see how this device will succeed in the market. But then again, we could be wrong.
