The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini is the pint size little brother of the X10

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini is the pint size little brother of the X10; and like its larger sibling it runs on an Android OS and sports the fantastic TimeScape overlay. The X10 Mini is the smallest full touch Smartphone on the market today and it performs like a real heavy weight with its superb social network support, messaging support and a media section which covers photography, video and music. The Swedish-Japanese tag team have made the phone so light and so small it will probably be the most lose-able phone ever made.

The basic design of the phone follows the same grain as the Xperia X10; it is available in a whole palette of colours so it is accessible to a wide range of consumers, but it has generally been focused on the young messaging crowd. The phone is aesthetically pleasing on the eye and has that novelty factor which makes it hard to put down, the 2.55 inch display is very receptive indeed; the screen only needs resistive technology as it is too small for multi touch, the user is not hampered by those thankfully, there is just no point investing in capacitive technology when you can barely fit two fingers on the screen anyway.

The Android 1.6 platform has had to lose a little weight to squeeze onto the X10 Mini, the transition seems to have gone well but the reductions are noticeable; sadly the Android home screen has been stripped away and a basic multi-page home screen is in place where only a single widget can be placed on each page. The four-corner shortcut system makes interface navigation a much easier experience; you can place your favourite or most used applications in each corner of the screen for quick, direct access. When you tap the down arrow on an app screen a cool draw pops up with an organized three-by-three grid of assorted apps where you can open applications without any extra scrolling or tapping.

With the X10 Mini's Android background you have full access to the Android Market app store; from here there are tons of third party downloadable applications for you to build a collection with. The phone has also been packed with a load of pre-loaded Google goodies; you have a Google Search engine for web searching services, Google Maps so you don't get lost and some Google messaging service like Gmail and Google Talk to help keep you in touch with friends and family. YouTube, you may be surprised to hear is a Google based service and the X10 Mini is fully integrated with the site, so both uploading and viewing clips is possible and easy.

TimeScape has also been skimmed down to translate onto the smaller device; it integrates your social networks with your contacts essentially and all of your social network activity is collected and displayed in one application for a simpler way to manage you friends status updates, tweets and online activities. The e-mail setup process is easy with accounts from Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail just a couple of the compatible providers you can use. Sony Ericsson have equipped the X10 Mini with Wi Fi connectivity which delivers a super speedy connection; it is reliable, consistent for as long as you are nearby a local WLAN hotspot.

The tiny smartphone is well endowed with a 5 mega pixel digital camera; it is supported by a LED flash and the picture quality is surprisingly good, videos come very crisp with a clear sound and all of your captured material can be uploaded to your favourite sharing web sites. The music player, as expected is nothing less than brilliant thanks to Sony Ericsson's superior experience with there WalkMan phones.

All in all the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini is a tiny phone with a huge personality; its small size and big performance will have this device in the pockets of many. The colour variety and mid-range sim-free cost will only help with the phones accessibility and the online aspects of the phone and messaging support will keep users busy. The Xperia X10 Mini has high expectations, let us hope the novelty factor of having such a tiny mobile phone well help lift it to the dizzying heights of previous Sony Ericsson devices.
