Expert on mobile phones, having worked in the industry for over 7 years.
The Toshiba TG01 is rumoured to be launching next week in the UK; let's see how it stacks up against two rival smartphones.
Toshiba TG01
Windows Mobile has taken a lot of stick form people in the past, most notably from Apple fans, but the new Toshiba TG01 brings it up to a level that can actually compete with the iPhone 3GS. You see, the Toshiba TG01 has the two things WinMo needs to make it run really well: a powerful processor (coming in at 1GHz) and a massive screen (coming in at an unbelievable 4.1 inches). Combine that with a custom front end, as well as a 3 megapixel camera, and a custom user interface, and the Toshiba TG01 is easily the most well-featured Windows Mobile phone ever made.
Samsung i8910 HD
And then, there's the Samsung i8910 HD... Whilst it has an 8 megapixel camera, the Samsung i8910 HD is also the first phone to record true 720p HD video. Never before has a phone been able to capture video at that massive high resolution, and coincidentally (or is it coincidence? Maybe not...), the Samsung i8910 HD captures high-def video at the exact quality that Youtube display high-def videos at. It's very possible that the Samsung i8910 HD was designed with its main feature being the ability to get yourself on Youtube, in high-definition. Only time will tell if it can topple the mighty Toshiba TG01, but the Samsung i8910 HD will undoubtedly be one of the phones of the year. Oh, and it's new Symbian interface is really very cool.
Palm Pre - a brave new interface
While we're talking interfaces, though, the Samsung i8910 HD is outdone by a phone that's due to be released in the second half of the year: the outstanding Palm Pre. What it brings to the party is the most intuitive interface ever found on a mobile phone. The Palm Pre features slick animations and gesture controls throughout, so that everything you want to do is just a touch or a swipe away. There's little doubt, the Toshiba TG01 has the power, and i8910 HD has got the camera, but the Palm Pre just can't be beaten in terms of interface.
