Understanding Cdma in Mobile Phones

CDMA is a short terms that refers to ‘Code Division Multiple Access’. It is used in the second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) mobile phone tethnology. So, what does CDMA do for your mobile phone?

CDMA multiplexes different signal or enables numerous signals to be transmitted and received through a single transmission channel. In ultra-high-frequency, this technology caters to the (UHF) cellular telephone systems that operate in the 800-MHz and 1.9-GHz bands. Ever since its conception and first usage, it has proven to give better voice and data communications than any other mobile technologies used for commercial purposes. So many subscribers can connect at any given time. It is used as the chief platform for many 3G technologies.

Originally this technology was developed for military use, during the Second World War. The allies used CDMA to jam transmission from the Germans by transmitting over many frequencies instead of the usual way of using just one frequency. CDMA’s developer was Qualcomm and the features of this technology were further enhanced by Ericsson.

CDMA technology offers a wide range of benefits for its users. It offers the benefits of an increased voice capacity, higher data throughput, increased battery life, and synchronization. CDMA uses a spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme which provides mobile phones a cutting edge in signal transmission and reception. Users of CDMA mobile phones have the capacity of making calls in areas which do not have digital cellular service because it has an analog capability. Phone calls made from mobile phone that have CDMA are more secure than analog conversations which can be easily picked up by a simple radio receiver.

The latest in CDMA development is the CDMA 2000. CDMA 2000 is reliable and robust technology. It is able to operate in different spectrum bands, and has also been tested for efficiency in the new IMT-2000 allocations. Operators using CDMA 2000 require fewer cell sites to operate and can deploy their cell site quicker. This means they are able to provide faster customer service. They are also able to offer a wide array of services for their customers and thereby see an increased return of investment from this technology.

CDMA is the dominant standard all over the United States, despite the fact that GSM is making inroads into this market. It is also very popular in parts of Asia and currently CDMA networks are reported to have more than 270 million subscribers across the globe.
