My Baby Can Read! Can Your Baby Read Too?

Robert Titzer is an baby enthusiastand the inventor of the Your Baby Can Read program for instructing babies to read. The Your Baby Can Read DVDs and flashcards were first published in 1997. The series' curriculum are based on Titzer's personal infant research, including his ownexperience of teaching his children, Aleka (born in 1991) and Keelin (born in 1994), to read as infants.

He writes, "Studies from all areas of language... show that it's simpler to learn the patterns of language early in childhood as opposed to to later in childhood." While some parents may think ofreading as a task too difficult for young babies, Titzer says, "It's likely the brain will evolve more appropriately for reading when the child learns to read early in childhood compared to later in school."

Titzer notes that according to a 2002 study by Yale University, "stimulating kid's neural circuitry for reading as babies is important." How early on? According to Titzer, "The window for acquiring language starts to close by age four." This indicatesthat children who learn to read after the age of four may not develop the best neural circuitry for reading. Says Titzer, "Children who are taught to read earlier prefer to read more than children kidswho are taught at age five or later."

Some critics maintain that there are only temporary differences to be realized from early reading. Yet, the Your Baby Can Read website cites several studies that suggest long-term benefits. This is sometimes known as the Matthews Effect, where rich learners get richer and slower learners get poorer."

Some skeptics believe learning to read early harms kids emotionally, but according to Titzer, "kids who enter school with reading skills have higher self-esteem than children who cannot read when they enter school" For him, the importance of learning to read early in life can hardly be overstated. "Reading increases learning skills, and it helps children be successful both in school and later in life." The academic achievements of Titzer's children - straight A students who have each advanced at least one grade in school - stand testament to this and the Your Baby Can Read system. Aleka even started her second semesterof college at the age of 16.
